The Cavallino Rampante (“prancing horse”) black prancing stallion on a yellow shield, typically with the initials S F (for Scuderia Ferrari), with three bands of green, white, and red (the Italian national colors) at the top, is the well-known representation of the Ferrari racing team. The road vehicles have an optional shield-shaped race insignia on the sides of both front wings, near to the door, and a rectangular badge on the hood (see image at top of page).
Enzo Ferrari won a race at the Savio track in Ravenna on June 17, 1923, and there he met Countess Paolina, the mother of Count Francesco Baracca, an Italian air force ace and World War I hero who had painted a horse on the side of his aircraft. Insinuating that doing so would be lucky for him, the Countess asked Enzo to employ this horse on his automobiles. Ferrari changed the “prancing horse” on Baracca’s plane from red to black (as it had been painted on the squadron planes as a sign of grief after the pilot was killed in action), and he added a canary yellow background because that is the color of Modena, where he was born. The original “prancing horse” on Baracca’s airplane was painted in red on a white cloud-like shape. The tail of the Ferrari horse, which in the original Baracca design was pointed downward, was the most obvious difference between the two horses from the beginning.
Since 1929, Ferrari has used the cavallino rampante on all official corporate correspondence. The cavallino rampante has been featured on Alfa Romeos raced by Scuderia Ferrari since the Spa 24 Hours of July 9, 1932.
Ancient coins have the prancing horse pattern, which is an old one.
