Ferrari Will Re-Enter the 40-Year-Old Outright Le Mans Sportscar Battle
After a 40-year absence, the legendary Italian sportscar manufacturer Ferrari will compete in the Le Mans 24 Hour event in 2023, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary.
For the first time since the 312PB in 1973, Ferrari confirmed today that it would enter the World Endurance Championship’s (WEC) premier division with a new hypercar.
Ferrari has nine outright victories in the Le Mans 24 Hour race, placing third after Porsche (19) and Audi. Ferrari played the defeated antagonist in both the Ford v Ferrari and Steve McQueen’s Le Mans movies (13).
Although it provided no additional information regarding its 2023 hypercar project, Ferrari will compete in the WEC under the new LMH rules.
Ferrari acknowledged that it had just recently started working on the hypercar and that it was very far along in the “design and simulation phases.”
Hawthorn, Mike
The first driver to claim victories in both Formula 1 and Le Mans was Mike Hawthorn, with his Le Mans victory coming first.
Hawthorn returned in a Jaguar D-type for the 1955 race after being disqualified for filling off the brake system before they were allowed to in 1953.
Early on in the race, Hawthorn and Mercedes driven by Juan Manuel Fangio engaged in a fierce struggle that saw them smash the lap record 10 times in the first two hours.
Tragic events occurred little over four hours into the marathon, which was otherwise shaping up to be amazing. In an effort to pit, Hawthorn braked in front of Lance Macklin’s Austin-Healey, causing Macklin to swerve and be struck by Pierre Levegh’s Mercedes-Benz 300SLR, which was launched into the air and into the crowd before striking a hill and exploding. The remainder of the car caught fire as the engine, suspension, radiator, and other pieces were tossed into the densely populated area.
Along with Levegh, more than 80 onlookers also perished, and 180 more people were hurt. Macklin managed to escape harm, but after another catastrophic accident the same year, he would never compete in racing again.
Despite an official inquiry finding that he wasn’t to blame for the collision and that it was a racing mishap, there was significant discussion over the part Hawthorn played in it. He made three more trips to Le Mans, but he was never able to place better than sixth overall.
He won the F1 championship in 1958, the year before he was killed in a car accident. Although he only won one race compared to Stirling Moss’s four for second place, he was able to finish more than his countryman Hawthorn, who retired from five races. As a result, Hawthorn and his Ferrari 246 won the championship by one point.
