I briefly owned a ’04, and if you have BMW Assist, you are without Bluetooth because that feature wasn’t offered as standard equipment until ’05. The buttons are present, but without additional hardware, it will not function. You can have both Assist and Bluetooth if you replace the present BMW Assist TCU unit with one from 2005 or later. If you don’t want to preserve the assist function, there are also kits that are only Bluetooth. As an added plus, they do nevertheless provide voice commands for the phone and navigation. I am aware that BMWs from 2004 used a Bluetooth protocol that is no longer in use. Except for a very pricey modification to your Bluetooth module from BMW, there are no now any cell phones produced that will pair with a 2004 BMW. A waste of time. Since it cost almost $2k to upgrade the Bluetooth in my wife’s ’04 330i, she had to convert to aftermarket Bluetooth gadgets when she acquired a new phone a few years back.
I believe the Bluetooth communication technology used by 2005 BMWs is more modern, but I can’t say for sure. I would guess that if your car is an early 2005, it might employ the same protocol as the ’04s.
