The Golf is and always has been the Golf, with the exception of North America, which is the first item to observe (although the Golf has also been sold in Mexico as the Caribe). The only other moniker worth mentioning is that the Golf has occasionally been marketed as the “Citi Golf” in South Africa.
In North America, the MK1 generation was referred as as the Rabbit from 1975 to 1984, and the MK5 generation from 2006 to 2009.
We are unable to locate much “concrete evidence” to support the decision to change the Golf’s name to Rabbit.
However, based on our analysis, it appears that a few important factors played a role in Volkswagen’s choice:
- The sport of golf, which was popular in America at the time, is clearly associated with the word “golf” (and remains popular to this day, of course). Despite the fact that Golf is the German form of Gulf Stream, the phrase actually refers to that wind. Volkswagen may have been worried that naming a car after a sport may turn away potential purchasers who weren’t interested in golf. In our opinion, there is a lot of logic behind this, even though many people still believe that the Golf was named after the sport. It’s probably not a good business move to restrict your automobile sales to golfers only.
- The word “Rabbit” conjures up images of nimbleness and quickness, traits shared by the original Golf/Rabbit. Since then, every model has ranked among the best in terms of driving dynamics. In some ways, the name “Rabbit” is a better fit for the car’s personality than “Golf.”
In the end, it was decided to call the Golf the Rabbit because it was thought that this would increase sales in the North American market.
