In 2021, just as the Biden administration was pushing for more American-built EVs with a higher percentage of domestic content, the plant was at the heart of an International Trade Commission (ITC) battle over trade secrets with rival South Korean supplier LG. Although American-made ID.4 versions won’t differ significantly from international versions in terms of appearance, they will include a variety of U.S. supply-chain components, including interior parts from Indiana and South Carolina, steel from Alabama and Ohio, and materials and components from a total of 11 states.
The ID.4 will first be produced in the United States with rear- or all-wheel drive and a larger 82 kwh battery pack, but later in the year, a rear-wheel drive variant with a 62 kwh battery pack will be produced there.
The manufacturer had previously hinted that the beginning price would be around $36,000, but with today’s announcementwhich is still to comethe automaker provided no additional clarification on the pricing.
