Toyota has a history of building tough off-road SUVs, including the luxury Land Cruiser, the 4Runner, and the FJ Cruiser. While the Land Cruiser will stop being sold in the United States starting in 2022 and the FJ Cruiser hasn’t been offered here since 2014, Toyota is determined to maintain its position as a leader in the off-road segment as the automotive industry shifts to electric vehicles, and it will soon introduce a tough compact electric SUV. The Compact Cruiser EV concept foreshadowed the boxy appearance, tough bumpers, and body cladding of the SUV. The electric engine is unknown, but given the rapid torque of electric motors, it should be reasonably speedy and capable of handling tough terrain.

The retro FJ replacement we need is the Toyota Compact Cruiser EV.
The Toyota Compact Cruiser EV is a budget-friendly EV that incorporates authentic Land Cruiser appearance.
Even before it starts production, the Toyota Compact Cruiser EV is garnering recognition. The tough-looking electric car updates classic Land Cruiser style to create something wholly contemporary and exceedingly cool.
It’s not entirely new that the Toyota Compact Cruiser EV exists. Late last year, the manufacturer released a few in-studio renderings and images of it. Even though it’s still a clay model for the time being, Toyota is providing us with new renderings now that it’s gaining more attention to show us what it would look like sitting in the real world.
Can I purchase a new FJ Cruiser?
$81,500
At the end of the previous year, someone paid that amount for a 63-mile 2014 FJ Cruiser on Bring A Trailer. Following Toyota’s decision to discontinue the model in the United States in late 2017 with the Final Edition, the retro-inspired SUV has seen an increase in popularity in recent years. The model is still very much alive and well, though some people would be surprised to learn this.
Although this YouTube video from a few days ago may be a little dated, a Toyota news release from earlier this week verifies the FJ Cruiser is still being produced. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and the semiconductor shortages, the business has been sending emails concerning changes to manufacturing in Japan. Although there will be a brief pause in off-roader assembly, Toyota still manufactures them in general.

The Toyota subsidiary Hino Motors, which was founded in 2006, manufactures the FJ Cruiser in its Hamura factory in Japan, from where it is sold to a number of nations. Until Tuesday, February 1st, when assembly will resume, it is now out of commission barring any other changes to the production schedule.
After some investigation, we found that the body-on-frame vehicle is listed on Toyota’s Middle East website, where it has an equivalent starting price of $41,000. A little over $48,000 and $41,500, respectively, are the starting prices in South Africa and the Philippines for the FJ Cruiser. These are just three instances, so if it’s still available in your nation, please let us know.
While the 16-year-old FJ Cruiser is still in production for the time being, Toyota may have shown us a sneak peek of its electric-powered spiritual descendant. One of the 15 new automobiles that were shown off while previewing its EV product roadmap in December was a blue, compact SUV called the “Compact Cruiser EV” that resembled the cuddly box on wheels.
Although we don’t anticipate seeing a production version in showrooms any time soon, it may come out at some point.
Why does Toyota no longer produce FJ Cruisers?
The first stone in the FJ Cruiser’s coffin was the recession of 2008, which signaled the beginning of declining sales and the end of profit. To honor Toyota FJ Land Cruisers, the Toyota FJ Cruiser had its concept premiere in 2003. As 2006 year models, the first production models hit the market. They were designed as a vintage off-road vehicle and were first highly well-liked.
Unfortunately, Toyota was severely impacted by the 2008 recession, which had a negative impact on FJ Cruiser sales. Although it was performing well prior to then, it was ultimately canceled by 2014. That was partly due to the FJ Cruiser’s likeness to the original Jeep.
Toyota wanted to build an off-road vehicle that stood out from the rest of what they were producing at the time, and the FJ Cruiser was their attempt to do that. The FJ Cruiser was discontinued in 2014 as a result of Toyota’s decision that the sales were too poor to justify the manufacturing costs associated with developing a second generation after the recession officially began.
Will Toyota produce a FJ Cruiser in 2023?
Unfortunately, the Toyota FJ Cruiser in retro form was discontinued in 2014. After debuting in 2006, the fashionable off-road mid-size SUV quickly gained popularity, but the recession caused a decline in sales for the FJ Cruiser.
Nevertheless, you shouldn’t worry because there are a ton of other SUVs with excellent off-roading skills that are comparable to the Toyota FJ Cruiser! Here is a list of 2023 SUVs that are ready for off-road driving:
What will a 2021 FJ Cruiser cost?
The base model’s median sales prices increased significantly, from roughly $14,000 in 2019 to $27,500 in 2020, and then increased again to $30,450 in 2021.
Where can I still get a FJ Cruiser?
Since 2006, Toyota has been manufacturing the retro-styled mid-size SUV known as the FJ Cruiser. The FJ Cruiser made its debut as a concept car at the January 2003 North American International Auto Show. After receiving favorable consumer feedback, the FJ Cruiser was given the go-ahead for production, and the finalized version made its debut at the January 2005 North American International Auto Show. [2] [3]
Since 2006, Toyota subsidiary Hino Motors in Hamura, Japan, has been producing the FJ Cruiser, which is structurally similar to the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado in many ways.
[4]: 96 The FJ Cruiser made its debut on the Japanese market on December 4, 2010, after its announcement on November 25.
On November 5, 2013, Toyota USA declared that the 2014 model year Trail Teams edition will be known as the “Ultimate Edition” and that the FJ Cruiser would no longer be produced in that region after that year.
[5] It was still being produced for markets like Australia. [6][7] until August 2016, when its shipment to that market was stopped. It is still offered in places including Chile, the Middle East, the Philippines, and South Africa as of April 2022[update]. [8] [9]
On September 12th, 2017, the “Final Edition” of the FJ Cruiser launched on sale in Japan.
[10] On January 31, 2018, sales of the FJ Cruiser were stopped there.
Are FJ Cruisers still worth anything?
As resale values for this retro-style have skyrocketed, perhaps absence really does make the heart grow fonder. [+]
Since Toyota withdrew this retro-styled truck-based SUV, resale values have skyrocketed, suggesting that perhaps absence truly does make the heart grow fonder. According to NADA Used Car Guide, it is at the top of the list of automobiles that maintain their original worth the best. Although the FJ is a rough-and-tumble truck, if you don’t mind being jostled around, it may be fun. [-]
How much were new FJ Cruisers?
In the US, the FJ Cruiser debuted in 2006 and was phased out in 2014. When brand-new, it had a retail price of under $40,000. The first year saw a total of 56,000 units sold, with subsequent years seeing sales of about 14,000 units.
The unique off-roader has a cult following and will likely continue to sell until 2017 or maybe 2020 in the UAE, Japan, and the Philippines, so spare and modification components will probably be sufficient for fans.
Depending on the model year, mileage, and condition, the FJ Cruiser’s current costs change over time. According to our research, the asking price for a 2012 model with 57,929 kilometers on the odometer is $33,998. On the other extreme, a 2007 model with 168,766 miles might sell for $12,999.
The FJ Cruiser won’t be the most economical daily commuter, despite the attractive price. The off-roader has a 4.0 liter V6 engine, which is not likely to be inexpensive to maintain. After the 2010 model year, there was an engine improvement that replaced single VVT-i with Dual VVT-i, improving the motor’s power and fuel efficiency. The ones produced in 2011 and beyond would be much better because of new enhancements.
Exists a 2020 FJ Cruiser model?
The Toyota FJ Cruiser’s combination of distinctive, retro-inspired appearance and all-terrain ability failed to get the sales it deserved due to the 2008 financial crisis. Toyota had to remove the neoclassic off-roader from showrooms in the United States, its original target market, due to years of poor, barely five-figure sales, but due to unexpected success elsewhere, Toyota didn’t completely abandon the FJ. In fact, you may still purchase a brand-new FJ Cruiser in 2020 if you reside in the United Arab Emirates, the SUV’s final bastion.
The 2020 FJ Cruiser is almost identical to the car that Americans haven’t been able to purchase since 2014 but is still proudly advertised as a part of Toyota’s current UAE portfolio. Although its infotainment system has been updated to 2020 specs with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, it still boasts the useful combination of a compass, inclinometer, and onboard tire pressure regulation system.
The 4.0-liter V6 engine, which was previously tuned to produce 270 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, continues to be the source of power. Either a six-speed manual transmission with a Torsen-style center differential or a five-speed automatic transmission sends power to all four wheels. The FJ’s 23 mpg combined fuel economy is still disappointing, but its optional secondary tank, which increases fuel capacity to 42 gallons, plus the cheap oil in the Middle East should make up for it.
Similarly, you can purchase a brand-new FJ Cruiser with many of the same improvements in South Africa. It’s not surprising that they receive all the goodies from there, including brand-new 70-Series Land Cruisers and regular-cab, long-bed Hiluxes.
With a starting price of 147,000 AED, the still-available FJ is slightly more expensive than the one we remember due to improvements to the infotainment and powertrain as well as the discontinuation of the base, rear-drive model. That amounts to just over $40,000, or approximately $11,000 more than the standard 2014 model’s American price after inflation.
Although it’s a lot of money to ask for a 14-year-old SUV, the Mega Cruiser, the FJ’s bigger, badder sibling, or a similarly upgraded Land Cruiser would cost much more. One can’t help but imagine that these foreign-market FJs will be some of the most sought-after imported off-roaders of the 2040s when the 25-year import prohibition on them is lifted.
What does Toyota’s FJ stand for?
Clearly, the “J refers for “Jeep, and the “F denotes the type of engine. Because they used a Type B engine rather than an F, the early FJs were actually known as BJs.
