Toyota is recalling millions of vehicles because some collisions may prevent airbags from deploying.
A total of 2.9 million 20112019 Corolla sedans, 20112013 Matrix hatchbacks, 20122018 Avalon sedans, and 20132018 Avalon Hybrid sedans are among the models that have been recalled.
In order to deploy airbags and tighten seatbelts in a collision, airbag control units must interpret or receive the proper data from crash sensors. This is an issue. According to Toyota, this issue is more prone to occur in specific collisions, such as underride collisions, in which one vehicle’s front end wedges beneath another’s rear end.
Any accidents or fatalities linked to this problem have not been confirmed or denied by a Toyota spokesman. However, the Office of Defects Investigation at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has discovered two “serious frontal crash incidents,” including one fatality, using Toyota Corolla sedans.
This announcement comes in response to an NHTSA inquiry into the airbag control unit, which was produced by the now-defunct TRW-ZF-TRW firm. Additionally, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mitsubishi, and Toyota have all utilised these components in their vehicles.
Vehicles using this control unit have previously been recalled by Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Hyundai, and Kia.

How long does it take to recall Toyota airbags?
According to NHTSA, it will take 2.5 years to fix each recalled batch of automobiles. Therefore, even if the last Takata recalls are issued in 2020, it won’t be over until late 2022 or early 2023. Even then, there may still be cars with faulty airbags on the road as recalls typically only complete about 80% of the time, and older cars typically have completion rates that are substantially lower.
Only Group 2 out of the eight groups that have been recalled thus far has had more than 60% of its recalled airbags repaired. Just over 11 million inflators were included in Batch 1, the largest and oldest group to be recalled. Only 6.3 million, or 57%, have had their repairs finished. According to a CR study of NHTSA statistics, about 40 million inflators have been recalled and 21 million have been repaired.
Manufacturers do not require permission from NHTSA to inform customers that parts are available, according to NHTSA spokeswoman Aldana. According to her, NHTSA has coordinated with some manufacturers to time consumer contacts so that there are as little gaps as possible between the original alert and the repair.
In addition to letters in the mail, Aldana stated that the NHTSA “encourages frequent communication between the vehicle makers and their customers.
At any point during the recall, customers should be informed immediately.
Does insurance provide replacement airbags?
Yes, the majority of policies will cover replacing your airbags if the other driver was at fault in the crash (in which case the at-fault driver’s liability insurance would cover it) or if you have collision insurance, which will cover damage to your car regardless of who was at blame.
However, certain vehicles with low cash values will be deemed a total loss by the driver’s insurance carrier if the airbags deploy due to the expensive cost of replacing airbags and installation charges (added to whatever other damage takes place). This implies that rather than paying for repairs, your insurance provider can decide to declare your car a total loss. Because of this, a driver may think of paying for airbag replacement and other repairs on their own, without contacting their auto insurer.
Do recalls ever expire?
From John Paul, here are some further details about auto recalls:
- A recall does not necessarily indicate that a car is of bad quality. It simply indicates that a component needs to be replaced since it is faulty or performing poorly. It does not constitute a criticism of the car as a whole.
- Recalls and extended warranties are not the same (sometimes referred to as secret warranties). In the latter, a component may not last as long as it should, in which case the manufacturer may decide to extend the warranty for that specific component. Volkswagen, for instance, informed some owners of specific models via letters that the ignition switch warranty had been increased to 10 years or 100,000 miles. Since the ignition switch did not need to be fixed, the vehicle was not subject to a recall.
- Recalls typically don’t have an expiration date. They will also change hands from one owner to the next. Even though you were not the owner at the time of the recall, you are still entitled to the repair if you purchase a used automobile and later learn it has an open recall.
- The manufacturer might demand a price for the repair after the car is ten years old.
