Just a fancy automatic, really. I wish there was a manual shift mode where you could truly select the gear (unless doing so will damage your transmission).
The simplest way to describe how Toyota’s S-mode operates is that the gear you choose determines the highest gear that the vehicle will go into. For example, if you put the transmission in S4, it will cycle through gears 1-4 but won’t go to fifth until you hit the red line, and if you put it in S3, it will cycle through gears 1-3, and so on.
The only purpose I can think of for it is engine braking. It’s actually not much use besides that.
