South Africa’s desire for compact SUVs is rising, and certain companies, like Suzuki and Toyota, are eager to fulfill it with their recently released Vitara Brezza and Urban Cruiser models.
Suzuki and Toyota struck a capital alliance agreement in 2019 to foster long-term collaboration. Suzuki will purchase 2 hybrid vehicles from Toyota, and Toyota will receive Suzuki’s Baleno and Vitara Brezza, both of which are currently offered locally as the Toyota Starlet and Urban Cruiser.
Although the recently introduced Vitara Brezza and Urban Cruiser are virtually the same vehicle, there are some significant distinctions between the two that South African shoppers may want to be aware of. Let’s look more closely…

Is the engine of the Toyota Urban Cruiser and Brezza identical?
No, the Toyota Urban Cruiser shares the same chassis as the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, and both vehicles are powered by a 1.5-liter, 4-cylinder petrol engine with 103 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque.
The Best with the Worst…. The Toyota cooperation with Maruti is a big source of despair for Toyota enthusiasts.
Is Maruti responsible for making Urban Cruiser?
The Toyota Urban Cruiser is more than simply a Maruti Vitara Brezza with a new paint job. The twin-slat grille and more aggressive fog lamp housing on the Urban Cruiser set it apart from the Vitara Brezza from the exterior. Additionally, the cabin receives a special hue of brown. Additionally, it will be produced by Maruti, just like the Glanza before it.
Maruti produces Urban Cruiser with a Toyota badge. Complete garbage very poor construction quality. Not at all worth the money.
Is Brezza a rebadged Toyota Urban Cruiser?
Since Toyota stated that they are considering entering the compact SUV market with the rebadged Brezza, the Toyota Urban Cruiser has become the topic of conversation in the automotive world. To increase its market share in India, the Japanese automaker can borrow vehicles like the Baleno, Ciaz, Ertiga, and Brezza thanks to the Toyota-Maruti collaboration. We’ve already seen how the Toyota Glanza turned out, and to be completely honest, we wish Toyota had done more than just change the name. Now that Toyota has the Urban Cruiser, does it share a design with the Maruti Brezza? Let’s investigate that!
Toyota Urban Cruiser is more than just Brezza’s design under a different name. In reality, the Japanese automaker has experimented well with the appearance, and if you look closely, you can see that the massive Fortuner is used as inspiration for the front design. Please keep in mind that Toyota is unrivaled when it comes to vehicles like the Innova and Fortuner, and with the release of Urban Cruiser, we hope it satisfies market demand.
Toyota has updated the Urban Cruiser’s appearance. The forthcoming SUV’s appearance is shown in the exclusive photo provided by Autocar India. It keeps the Brezza-style projector headlights with LED DRLs that also function as indicators up front. The Brezza’s front skid plates have also been modified.
Why does the Urban Cruiser cost more than the Brezza?
The 60:40 split and foldable rear seats, the sliding front armrest, the rather roomy interior, and the connectivity features are all practical. Toyota refers to its entertainment system as Smart Playcast whereas Maruti refers to its as Smartplay Studio.
Each has a 1462cc gasoline engine. The two available transmissions are the 5-speed manual and 4-speed AT. Both vehicles have a quiet cabin, good acceleration, excellent fuel economy (I got 16 km/l while driving both in Delhi), comfortable seats, and nice steering feedback.
Because the Urban Cruiser isn’t available in a base model like the Vitara Brezza, its ex-showroom starting price is little over a lakh rupees higher. The Urban Cruiser costs $5,000 more than the Vitara Brezza, trim to trim. Although the Vitara Brezza comes with the normal 2-year/40,000-km warranty, the Urban Cruiser is being sold with a standard 3-year/1 lakh-km warranty, which may make it seem like a “better buy” to some. The Urban Cruiser is also a little bit newer than the Vitara Brezza, which simply looks out of date.

Does the Suzuki engine in the Urban Cruiser?
A 1.5-liter, four-cylinder petrol engine from the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza powers the Toyota Urban Cruiser. This engine produces 138Nm of torque and 103bhp of power. Both a four-speed automatic transmission and a five-speed manual transmission are equipped with this engine.
Toyota borrows engines and the exterior styling of the Brezza from Maruti Suzuki because they are highly proficient with their own engines. When I learned about the engine from Suzuki, I decided against purchasing an urban cruiser. Does Toyota still rely on Suzuki-Maruti? Toyota must supply every component of the urban cruiser.
incredibly weak horsepower and torque, four-speed automatic… Toyota, please buy your own car and quit using Maruti’s credit option.
Why did Urban Cruiser not succeed?
In September of last year, Toyota Motor introduced the sub-four-meter small SUV Urban Cruiser to the Indian market.

For faulty airbag concerns, Japanese auto giant Toyota Motor has decided to recall a significant number of its Urban Cruiser sub-compact SUVs. The automaker has thus far had to recall 9,498 units altogether.
The recalled Urban Cruiser SUVs, according to reports, were produced between 28 July 2020 and 11 February 2021. These SUVs’ driver-side airbag looks to be the source of the problem. The automaker will carry out more tests and replace them with new ones.
Why do the Brezza and Urban Cruiser look alike?
There is no disputing that the Urban Cruiser looks almost exactly like the Brezza, which is to be expected given that it is a spin-off. However, the Toyota does get a redesigned front grille and bumper to give it a more distinctive appearance. Additionally, the Toyota logo is noticeable enough to distinguish it from the Brezza.
While the interior of the Brezza has all-black upholstery, the interior of the Urban Cruiser has brown upholstery.
There are six different color possibilities for the new Toyota product. Sunny White, Iconic Grey, Suave Silver, Rustic Brown, Spunky Blue, and Groovy Orange are among them. Three dual-tone variations are also available for the top-end model.
Urban Cruiser only has a 1.5-liter gasoline engine, which has a maximum power output of 103 horsepower. A four-speed automatic gearbox or a five-speed manual gearbox are available. Similar to the Brezza, the automatic variant receives a mild hybrid system.
Although Urban Cruiser is in fact Brezza under a different brand, there are numerous little and subtle differences that enable it tell its own story in the Indian market. Toyota is known for building dependable vehicles in this country, and the Urban Cruiser sub-compact SUV may succeed despite the fierce competition it faces thanks to Toyota’s strong service network.
What was the Toyota Urban Cruiser’s replacement?
Both the Maruti Vitara Brezza and the Toyota Urban Cruiser will share a platform. The Heartect platform, which will also underpin Toyota’s Urban Cruiser, will serve as the foundation for the forthcoming Maruti Vitara Brezza. These two automobiles will have comparable engine options. There is a very good chance that these cars would come equipped with Maruti’s 1.5-liter hybrid powertrain. Most of the fundamental features of the cars will also be common.
Is the Urban Cruiser’s construction superior to the Brezza’s?
Does the Toyota Urban Cruiser have the same build quality as the Brezza? Yes, the build quality would remain the same since Maruti produces both vehicles on the same platform. It is worse than Breeza, you may say.
Should I get an Urban Cruiser or Brezza?
The Maruti Vitara Brezza and the Toyota Urban Cruiser have identical equipment, therefore none has anything to offer over the other.
Conclusion: Despite the fact that both SUVs have comparable features, we advise choosing the Toyota Urban Cruiser since it comes with a higher basic warranty package than the Vitara Brezza. The Brezza has a basic warranty of 2 years/40,000 km compared to the Urban Cruiser’s 3 years/1,00,000 km.
Alloy wheels, a rear washer and wiper, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cruise control, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, 60:40 split back seats, and a rear center armrest with cup holders are common features (compared to earlier models).
Conclusion: Since the Toyota Urban Cruiser offers a stronger warranty package than the Vitara Brezza, it is our choice in this case. However, the Vitara Brezza appears to be a more sensible choice when it comes to the automatic model because, in our opinion, the premium of Rs 15,000 for the Urban Cruiser is a bit high.
Has Urban Cruiser any marketability?
Certain benefits, such as peace of mind, dependability, and strong resale value, are obvious when you claim you drive a Toyota. The Urban Cruiser can be compared to other Toyota SUVs in this regard, despite being less priced. In actuality, the Urban Cruiser enters the lucrative and fiercely competitive sub-four meter sector as an underdog. Although it is unlikely to be the top option, it shouldn’t truly be avoided.
Toyota bought the Brezza?
On Thursday, Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) announced that it would not, contrary to prior plans, have Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s manufacturing plant in Karnataka serve as the location for the production of its small SUV Vitara Brezza.
The largest automaker in the nation said that it will assign another model to the Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) facility in place of the Vitara Brezza.
However, it omitted to mention the model’s name that will now be made at the TKM facility, where production has been temporarily halted because of a dispute between the worker union and management.
In a regulatory filing, MSI stated that “the Board has today approved to modify the model to be manufactured at TKM from Vitara Brezza to another model.”
A TKM spokeswoman responded to inquiries with the following statement: “We would want to refrain from additional comment at this time, addressing our future product plans, after thorough discussions between Suzuki and Toyota.
The MSI board had decided to enable Vitara Brezza production at TKM’s Bidadi plant to begin in 2022 last March.
As part of a global partnership between Toyota and Suzuki, MSI already sells the Vitara Brezza to TKM, which rebrands the vehicle as the Urban Cruiser for the home market.
The premium hatchback Baleno from MSI is also acquired by TKM under the same agreement, and it is marketed as Glanza.
In March 2018, as part of ongoing cooperation negotiations that had begun in 2017, Suzuki and Toyota agreed that Suzuki would provide Toyota with the premium hatchback Baleno and the small SUV Vitara Brezza, and Toyota would provide Suzuki with the Corolla sedan.
Later, the two businesses decided to broaden the extent of their cooperation and talk about brand-new joint projects in the areas of technological advancement, auto manufacturing, and market expansion.
According to the contract, TKM would produce Suzuki-designed cars for India sales via their separate brand networks.
Additionally, the two businesses resolved to explore working together to export vehicles created by Suzuki, including those made by TKM, Toyota’s Indian division, from India to Africa and other areas through their respective global sales networks.
