That is essentially all we currently know. According to the announcement, the gearbox would be “an entirely new, custom manual transmission. The Supra and BMW Z4 share the majority of their parts. But BMW only offers an 8-speed automatic in that vehicle; no stick is available.

Toyota only offered the eighth-generation Supra with an eight-speed automatic transmission when it first debuted the model in 2019. It’s a decent gearbox, but a real sports car should at least include a manual transmission option. When Toyota eventually realized this, it took them over three years, and in the beginning of 2022, they began to offer the Supra with the long-awaited six-speed manual transmission. Now the question is: should you choose the upgraded Supra or the recently released GR86 if you want to buy a Toyota sports vehicle with a manual transmission? Toyota Supra: is it manual?
However, one complaint from drivers with a passion persisted: the Supra didn’t come with a manual transmission. For 2023, the Supra’s six-cylinder 3.0 and 3.0 Premium versions will come standard with a six-speed manual transmission in addition to the current automatic transmission.
Do Toyota Supras have automatic transmissions?
Prior until 2023, all Supra models came standard with rear-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission; this year, a six-speed manual transmission is finally offered, although only in conjunction with the optional turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine. Our long-term 2020 Supra 3.0 (with the eight-speed automatic) recorded some incredibly amazing acceleration times at the test track, reaching 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and 100 mph in 9.5 ticks. That puts it up against cars like the BMW M2 Competition, Porsche Cayman GTS, and Chevy Camaro SS in the major leagues. In fact, it accelerates more quickly than the renowned fourth-generation Supra, which had an inline-six engine with 320 horsepower that was sequentially turbocharged. The Supra’s suspension is accommodating enough to drive on a daily basis despite its performance capability. Its accurate, finely weighted, and direct steering adds to its fun-to-drive appeal. At our test track, the less expensive four-cylinder variant ran a swift 60 mph in 4.7 seconds. That beats the BMW Z4, the Supra’s German cousin, which scored a 5.0-second time to 60 mph. The ease with which our long-term Supra became bogged in the snow was the only drawback we discovered with its performance.
Why is the new Supra an automatic only vehicle?
We trust Toyota when it says it went to great lengths to build this transmission exclusively for this car because BMW does not currently sell the B58 inline-sixthe version that powers six-cylinder Supraswith a manual transmissionin the United States. The power of the engine will be the same as when it is mated to the eight-speed automatic, but the final-drive ratio for the manual is shorter (3.46 vs. 3.15). Additionally, it has a rev-matching feature that may be turned off.
A BMW or a Toyota Supra?
In case you somehow didn’t know, the new Supra is essentially a BMW Z4 on the inside. It has a BMW drivetrain, interior, and parts. It is propelled by a B58 twin-turbo straight-six engine from BMW.
How many Supras are manual?
Three Supra versions will be available with the manual: the 3.0, 3.0 Premium, and the limited-edition A91-MT. The final variation will only be offered for sale in the US in quantities of 500 during the 2023 model year. It is available in matte white or gray and has a special upholstery made of cognac leather, an Alcantara shifter with the “GR logo, a 12-speaker JBL audio system (which is also standard on the 3.0 Premium), 19-inch alloy wheels, unique red brake calipers, and “Supra badging.
A new technology called “Hairpin+,” created to make quick bends a breeze if you ever find yourself in the middle of a car chase on a winding mountain road, is included with all 2023 Supras, regardless of transmission. The traction- and braking-control systems have been recalibrated, and the center console’s form has been modified to prevent your hand from slamming into the instrument panel when you shift between third and fourth gears.
It should be noted that there are other vehicles with manual transmissions available besides the 2023 Supra. On Wednesday, Porsche revealed it is a standard feature on the 2019 Porsche 911 Sport Classic. However, stick-shift vehicles are unquestionably uncommon. According to The New York Times, only 1% of the vehicles built for sale in the US last year have manual transmissions, down from 35% in 1980. When you consider that only 18% of US drivers claim to be able to operate a stick shift, the fall makes sense.
Toyota is nevertheless making an effort to preserve manuals. The sporty GR86 and the less stylish Corolla are the other two of the brand’s current three vehicles available in the US with the function (yes, the Corolla). The business also filed a patent for an EV system earlier this year that would use a fake pedal and shifter to imitate shifting gears.

Will there be a Supra in 2024?
Toyota’s engineers intend to equip the Supra with a BMW engine. Specifically the new 500 hp twin turbo 3.0 L, which will come in the BMW models X3 and X4 M. The Toyota GR Supra will give rise to a limited-edition GRMN Supra with a little bit more power (BMW produces this engine with up to 382bhp in countries not subject to EU emissions regulations) but possibly 100kg less weight due to lighter wheels, carbon brakes, carbon seats, less soundproofing, and other factors. Toyota: Will There Be a 2023 Supra?
The starting price of the 2023 Toyota Supra with the new six-speed manual transmission is $53,595, which is the same as the automatic version. The A91-MT special model, which is exclusively available in manual transmission, costs $59,440 and has a brown leather inside.
The new Supra’s gearbox type is unknown.
In case you missed it, Toyota is now offering a six-speed manual transmission with the 3.0-liter Supra. While stating that the gearbox was “designed and calibrated expressly for use with the coupe’s straight-six engine,” Toyota’s original material on the issue was obviously rather ambiguous as to what transmission specifically this car would employ. It then abruptly made a 180-degree turn and said, “The engineering team redesigned an existing gearbox casing, driveshaft, and gear set.”
I asked Toyota for clarification because I was wondering about what “existing” components will be found inside the future manual GR Supra. And as we had kind of guessed all along, Toyota had basically just adjusted a ZF-manufactured BMW unit to match the rest of the vehicle. This also dispels any lingering theories that this was a genuine Toyota effort created from scratch or even a beefed-up rear-wheel-drive version of the GR Corolla transmission.
Even the transmission code for this Supra-specific gearbox in the BMW parts book is distinct: GS6L50TZ. For what it’s worth, this SupraMKV forum post states that the code for the manual in the less potent and foreign-spec BMW Z4 sDrive20i is GS6L40LZ. According to BMW gearbox identification guidelines, the distinction between “L50T” and “L40L” denotes a change in the “type” and gearset of the transmission. The “GS6” and “Z” bits of the codes, which stand for six-speed manual and ZF, respectively, denote the manufacturers. The manual found in the current M3 and M4 is known as GS6-45BZ for additional reference.
Anyway, some allegedly Toyota-specific work on the Supra’s gearbox included the removal of the acoustic package to reduce weight, a “newly engineered large diameter clutch with a reinforced diaphragm spring,” a shorter final drive ratio of 3.46 as opposed to the automatic Supra’s 3.15 to improve low-end acceleration, a lever ratio that’s said to minimize shift effort, as well as the specific weight and shape of the 200-gram shift knob.
