When you press the gas pedal, the engine and its six-speed automatic transmission remain mostly in the background yet provide you with a strong forward thrust and a pleasant exhaust grunt.
The power train is virtually undetectable in all other situations. Smooth and almost imperceptible downshifts, rapid upshifts, and speed changes are all part of the shifting process. With the exception of emergency stops, where the transmission trembles slightly, all noise, vibration, and harshness are of Lexus caliber. The pedal offers a solid, constant feeling from highway speeds to zero speed when you do need to stop.
On Michigan highways, where the average traffic speed is between 80 and 85 mph, the V6 frequently returned 30 mpg despite its thirst being more than the four- cylinder’s. The fuel economy decreased to around 20 mpg in the city and averaged out to approximately 24 mpg, which is not bad for a V6.
Even if the steering is numb in the middle and throughout, which is all that matters to most people, enthusiasts will lament it because it turns the car without the need for enormous forearms.
The suspension is on Sears’ softer side, absorbing both minor and major pavement irregularities with little noise or shudder. Although it doesn’t provide a fully luxurious feeling, which is more like being on a boat drifting in the water, its suspension is more forgiving than that of its competitors from Honda or Mazda.

Adaptive cruise has a range of 25 to 108 mph, but it won’t bring you to a complete stop if traffic does, so you must be careful. On a typical highway, however, the cruise control seamlessly accelerates and decelerates to keep up with the flow of traffic.
The lane-departure warning is significantly too erratic, sometimes sounding even when it seems the car is not even close to the lane’s edge. A lot of the “LDW not active at speeds below…” alerts start to bother you if you drive past parked cars because it also displays a message when you veer from your lane on a side street. No automatic steering is available to stop lane drift.
Down to brass tacks
The XLE is the Camry’s top trim, and it comes with a lot of features. Our test vehicle cost $35,170, which included $835 for destination, over the XLE V-6’s base price of $31,370.
