How Often Does Toyota Change Body Styles

Over a three-year period beginning last fall with the debut of the revamped 2019 RAV4, a top executive announced that Toyota would introduce 12 completely new or significantly redesigned vehicles.

Eight additional vehicles will also be updated during that time, according to Jack Hollis, general manager of the Toyota Division. And the “special edition” vehicles are not included in that number; it only relates to the Toyota Division. Additionally, Lexus-made vehicles are not included.

In an interview at the New York International Auto Show, Hollis said that “this is more new-vehicle debuts than in any three-year period in Toyota history.”

The updated RAV4, remodeled Corolla sedan, and recently released Corolla sedan hybrid are already included in the total, however the Corolla hatchback is not.

The new Supra, remodeled Highlander, and redesigned Yaris will all be released later this year (a rebadged version of the Mazda2 hatchback). It appears that a new Sienna will soon be available. The following-generation Camry, which would undergo a redesign in the fall of 2022 if on a conventional five-year cycle, is not included in the three-year period. Land Cruiser, which is “not on the horizon,” according to Hollis, is also not on the schedule for a change. But as other media outlets have reported, Toyota North America is still committed to the Land Cruiser.

Hollis said that a new platform that will support Tundra, Tacoma, 4Runner, and Sequoia is being developed, but he did not confirm that their launch timing would occur within the three-year window. That again, there isn’t much of a rush to rebuild those two body-on-frame vehicles given that the Tacoma and older 4Runner had their best sales years ever in 2018.

Hollis, who identifies as “a body-on-frame man” and has previously owned trucks and purist-SUVs, said, “All four of those cars are significant to our family, and they will arrive in a rhythm.”

Hollis added that the new pickup truck assembly factory in Guanajuato, Mexico, will free up space in San Antonio, Texas, for either additional trucks or vehicle varieties, even though it won’t be competing with Detroit for pickup sales supremacy.

Guanajuato will initially have an annual capacity of 100,000 units, but by 2025 that number may increase to 300,000 units. When it opens in 2021, the new Toyota and Mazda joint plant in Alabama will be able to produce 300,000 units of both the Corolla and an unidentified Mazda (perhaps the CX-30). Moving Corolla production to Alabama frees up space for Corolla-sized versions at Toyota’s Mississippi facility.

Toyota might introduce same-segment versions that are not currently offered, according to Hollis. According to Hollis, investing in hot segments could provide more rewards than taking a chance on investments in white regions where there are no players at the moment.

Hollis said, “There’s place beneath the RAV4,” for a crossover product in addition to the C-HR hatchback, adding that the C-absence HR’s of all-wheel drive is “limited,” while glancing across the show floor at the Hyundai Venue that nudges up against Hyundai’s Kona.

“Even though they may be in the same market group, their prices may vary. Or perhaps one is on a road while the other is off. It might be greater in height, breadth, or power “Hollis remarked. We often find ourselves wanting to be in many markets, but what about having several items in the same market?

According to Hollis, even though having automobiles from the same segment on the same showroom floor can result in sales being cannibalized, the end outcome is typically an increase in additional sales.

When did the body of the Toyota RAV4 change?

For this generation, the RAV4 is a little more conventional than it was for the last.

Even though the car was a little bit longer than previously, the V6 and third-row seats were gone. But to improve fuel efficiency, a four-cylinder and continuously variable gearbox combination became common. A liftgate was also introduced, and the spare tire was positioned underneath the cargo floor, a design strategy that other compact SUVs had been employing for years.

Toyota updated the RAV4 for the 2016 model year in 2015. It simplified the outside style, improved interior refinement by adding extra soundproofing, and introduced a number of other amenities.

Even though it wasn’t mechanically different from the conventional models, the 2017 lineup was finally expanded to include a tough-looking Adventure model.
