The Auris Hybrid, which is available as a hatchback, wagon, and non-hybrid powertrains, uses the Prius Liftback’s 1.8-liter Atkinson-cycle engine and combines it with electricity to produce Toyota’s “Hybrid Synergy Drive,” which is a technology developed by the company (HSD).

The Auris is not so little, but its external dimensions place it in the C-segment (compact) when compared to the D-segment (midsized) Prius. Maurice Durand, a U.S. Toyota Product Communications Specialist, responded that Toyota would “never say never,” but that it currently has no plans to import the Auris because there are a number of problems that would need to be resolved first. He also believes that the Auris Touring Sports wagon and possibly the Auris Hybrid Hatchback would negatively impact Prius v sales.

Efficiency

The Auris Hybrids’ performance here can only be conjectured, but we do know how they stack up against the standard Prius and the UK version of the Prius v.

According to the kind British testing protocol, the standard Prius obtains 72.4 mpg and emits 89 g/km of CO2. The Auris Hybrid hatchback’s fuel economy rating is 8% higher at 78.5 mpg, but its emissions are 84 g/km.

Additionally, the Auris “Touring” is rated at 76.3 mpg and 85 g/km CO2, which is pretty capacious and beautifully fashioned but not as spacious as the bigger and perhaps 7-seat “Prius+” (Prius v). When compared to the UK-market Prius v’s rating of 68.9 mpg and 96 g/km, this has an mpg improvement of 10%.

Evolved

Toyota had learned from the 2009 global launch of the third-generation Prius by the time the production Auris made its debut in 2012. As they upgraded and positioned the Auris models to be sold alongside the Prius, Toyota’s engineers made several tweaks.

The Auris’ eCVT transmission, despite using the same powertrain, is “built up to have a more linear relationship between acceleration and engine speed, which also helps increase the impression of power,” according to Eelen.

We mistakenly believed it to be quicker because of this. Toyota adjusted the eCVT and accelerator pedal characteristics so that the Auris’s pedal response is a little quicker at slower speeds, which enhances how the power is felt.

Ironically, the Auris does take longer to reach speeds of 100 kph. The Auris took 10.9 seconds and the Prius 10.4 seconds to accelerate.

Why? The powertrain tuning, while seeming a little more responsive, is actually not nearly as quick as the Prius Liftback, which has a 0.25 coefficient of drag compared to the 0.28 of the Auris.

Despite what the clock may indicate, the Auris can accelerate to highway legal speeds and beyond, giving the impression that it isn’t very slow.

If that matters or not, it also appears more like a conventional car than the Prius and is incredibly comfortable to sit in and drive.

When heated up, the Auris is also a bit quieter than the Prius, and when combined with the optional thick leather-wrapped steering wheel with thumb rests at the 2 and 10 o’clock positions and the supportive bolstered perforated leather seats, it has a sportier appearance.

Eelen claims that frequently chosen trim options tend to make the Auris come in lighter. We evaluated the fully loaded “lounge grade versions of the ordinary Auris Hatchback and the Auris Touring Sports.

“When comparing like with like, the Auris hybrid is somewhat lighter than the Priusa full spec.” A full-specified Prius weights 1425kg (3,142 pounds), compared to the Auris’ 1,390kg (3,064 pounds), he noted.

Eelen did point out, however, that due to a difference in the basic features, such as lighter wheels, etc., the entry-level Prius is 11 pounds lighter than the entry-level Auris (1365kg vs 1370kg).

The hatchback also displayed improved turn-in responsiveness and resistance to understeer. The Prius’ torsion beam suspension is replaced by a full double-wishbone system in the back of the Auris, which also has a significantly quicker steering ratio.

This is not to argue that the car poses a danger to the VW GTI or other hot hatches, but rather that it is comparable to the Prius and has benefited from having an older sibling.

All things considered, the Auris is functional, and for a super fuel-efficient vehicle larger than a Prius c, much more comparable to the standard Prius, but with a smaller car’s mpg, it was difficult not to admire what Toyota had accomplished.

Pricing
