First, we investigated which well-known brands had the highest maintenance costs throughout the first ten years of a car’s lifespan. To determine their average cost by brand, we categorized all model years by brand. We discovered the amount spent on every two oil changes in order to estimate annual maintenance expenditures (as oil changes are generally done every six months).
The most expensive luxury imports are Cadillac and domestic luxury brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Just in terms of maintenance, a Toyota is around $10,000 less expensive over a 10-year period.
Toyota is by far the most cost-effective brand. Toyota manufactures both Scion and Lexus, the second and third most affordable brands. All three are 10% less expensive than the national average.

Our data show that the Sebring from Chrysler is the most expensive vehicle to maintain, which is probably why Chrysler redesigned it in 2010. The premium or full-sized vehicles from several manufacturers, such the Audi A4 Quattro, as well as German imports (like the BMW 328i and Mercedes-Benz E350), are also fairly pricey.

Customers are more concerned about one issue than any other, though: which vehicles will just not start?
The figure below provides our response and restricts the comparison to vehicles that are 10 years old or newer.
The results of this list are rather damning, even though it may also be a reflection of certain owners’ diligence as well as the caliber of the vehicles’ construction: Three of the top five brands have been dropped in recent years.

This may help to explain why some of these models were abandoned. Several Mercedes-Benz cars and even high-end BMW models are included in the list of embarrassing automobiles.
