The vehicle gets 6.9 L/100 km (34 mpg) of fuel economy in the city and 5.2 L/100 km (45 mpg) of fuel economy on the highway. During my week with the Corolla, I significantly increased my fuel efficiency compared to the previous model, averaging 7.9 L/100 km (30 mpg). As usual, most of that is sluggish city commuting with a few brief freeway trips and one frantic interstate run. The 50-liter gasoline tank is identical as well.

The S trim model gained a little weight, weighing in at 1,295 kilograms, or 55 pounds (2,865 pounds).

Exterior

This is without a doubt the most striking Corolla ever. You all scream in unison, “But that’s all relative.” The old Corolla was a turd that couldn’t be polished, so you do have a point. Let me still say it. The brand-new Corolla is gorgeous. It’s a nice automobile. It’s a nimble little automobile with a dangerously slanted windscreen.

The S trim features a stylish grille, an almost aggressive-looking front fascia, a S rear fascia with a rear lip spoiler, and an exhaust tip in chrome. You may make the car appear good by adding some attractive tail lights, integrated fog lights, and the standard automatic LED projector headlights. The 17-inch rims with 215/45 rubber tires look amazing as well.

Interior/Tech/Convenience

Toyota continued to whittle away at the interior as well. The documents exhibit a noticeable improvement. The dash has lovely textures and soft-touch plastics, and the fit and quality are superb, making for a stunning improvement. The styling also appeals to me a lot. It’s not overly complicated, but it’s dressed up enough that it doesn’t look like it belongs in a basic car. Additionally pleasing are the piano black and brushed metallic embellishments.

There is a wonderful pair of heated seats.

I discovered them to be really cozy, and they even provide decent bolstering. There is power adjustment on the driver’s side. The media, handsfree, phone, and driver information screen controls are all located on the manually adjustable steering wheel’s large, chunky buttons. A 3.5-inch Multi Information display, which manages your trip meters, fuel economy and range, driving time, and vehicle settings, is located between the two primary gauges in front of you.

The first panel in the center stack is a 6.1-inch touchscreen.

Although it is not the sharpest thing in the world, it is responsive and easy to read.

It manages the car’s phone, audio system, and fuel economy records. The AM, FM, CD, auxiliary, USB, and Bluetooth streaming music sources are fed into the sound system, which produces excellent sound. An automated climate control system is located behind the screen.

The gear selector, two cupholders, and a conventional parking brake lever are all located on the center console. A standard power tilt/slide sunroof is mounted above, and keyless entry is provided, but the ignition is keyed. The only available driver aid technology is a backup camera.

Rear Seats

Each of the three back seats has a headrest and a seatbelt. Despite being flat, the seats are quite comfortable. At 5’10”, I felt that the headroom was adequate for me, but anyone taller will need more. Legroom is adequate for this class, and there is adequate foot space beneath the front seats. Although the middle seat is relatively small, an adult may utilize it if necessary because the floor is nearly flat.

Apart from that, it’s quite bare back there. One map pocket on the seatback and a weak dual cupholder that clumsily flips out of the center console’s back. and tiny bottle-holding door bins. I’m done now.

For kid seats, there are two sets of LATCH anchors. Our three children could fit back there, but with two of their chairs in place, it became narrow.

Storage

Good interior storage choices include a great drop-in bin beneath the center stack, where you will also find auxiliary, USB, and 12V connections, decent front door bins, and a sizable glove compartment. Additionally, there is a deep carpeted bin behind the armrest as well as dual-level storage with a lidan organizer tray at the top.

When you fold the back seats down, there is a noticeable increase in cargo volume, and I found the 369 liters of trunk space to be reasonably handy. They don’t fold flat, but rather in a 60/40 split.

The Drive

Although the Corolla wouldn’t be considered fast, its mild grunt is sufficient for daily driving. Here, the CVT is the big news. It is not only a significant improvement over the antiquated 4-speed automatic, but it is a terrific transmission overall.

However, there is still enough of get-up-and-go for the 95% of the time that we do in standard drive mode. The Sport mode was what I liked the most. Laugh whenever you want. Let me wait. Done? No? I’ll continue to wait. I appreciated how the Corolla responds more quickly when the transmission is in sport mode. It starts off the line substantially quicker and has simulated gears. Yes, the CVT’s phony gear ratios convincingly cause the car to crank and then lower its RPMs like an automatic going through the motions. Shifts between the simulated gear ratios can be made manually using the gear selection or paddles, and they happen much faster than they would in a typical automatic transmission.

The Corolla’s ride quality is excellent; only the strongest impacts reach the cabin after being absorbed by the car. It’s solid, sometimes jiggly, but it’s always cozy. And sure, despite being uninspiring, the handling is rather nice. In contrast to what you might expect from a vehicle with “Corolla” written on the back, the car maintains a pretty smooth driving surface and turns with greater vigor. Overall, it’s a car that drives adequately on the road, but the electrical steering is still not quick enough and, as with other Toyotas, the somewhat drowsy steering feel serves as a reminder that you’re not driving a sports car.

According to Toyota, reduced noise and vibrations will result from better sound insulation and sound absorption throughout the cabin. Although you can hear the tires hammering over road defects, I found that the noise levels around the town are excellent. At highway speeds, the amount of road noise disappointed me, but the wind noise remained remarkably low. Most of the time, visibility outside the car is good. Shoulder checking is somewhat hindered by the rear pillar on the passenger side. The brakes are adequate but not particularly noteworthy.

Nitpicks

Unfortunately, you have to use the inside latch or the key fob to open the trunk from the outside. Speaking of trunk annoyances, the interior of the trunk lacks a handle. As a result, you’ll get dirt on your hands and notice handprints on your trunk lid. This is especially frustrating because the Yaris, which is one step below it, has a beautiful, accessible inside trunk handle.

The Verdict

As I’ve already mentioned, the Corolla is arguably the most improved car I’ve ever tested. Toyota not only did a fantastic job of making it look attractive, but they also kept the style simple and clean, so the appearance should endure. A similar strategy is advantageous for the inside. a considerable design upgrade, along with much more refined materials and accessories, all without going excessive. Additionally, everything seemed larger in my opinion. Finally, the drivetrain. As a rule, I dislike CVTs, but this one is executed wonderfully, and on top of that, it has so many advanced features compared to the 4-speed automatic transmission that you can’t help but admire it.

It had a high WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor). She was taken aback by how much nicer it looked both inside and out than the previous one. She stated the style was appealing and that she would like owning the vehicle. She considered the absence of illuminated vanity mirrors to be one of her complaints.

It is a surefire prescription for sustained success for a best-selling vehicle to experience such tremendous development in the styling and driving categories while maintaining its exceptional fuel efficiency and almost certainly its durability. The automobile should win the class it already dominates if the price is kept essentially the same. The Corolla will still sell well, but for the first time in a very long time, it’s a car that might be viewed as attractive for factors other than its simplicity, dependability, and cost. Therefore, Toyota did a good job with the Corolla.
