I think it’s a lot of fun, but anyone getting into an LC76 to drive or ride in one needs to be prepared to set aside any notions of comfort and safety in favor of the pure excitement of living life from the seat of what is effectively a truck.

Spending any time in the LC76 on the move is a huge barrel of laughs, from the big throw of the tall gear stick to the old-armchair comfortable cloth seats to the low-level rumble of the 4.5-litre V8 as you truck along the highway to the high commanding, driving position (as if you’re driving a sugar-cane harvester).

When you pitch it into tighter turns, there is body-roll, the steering is a little truck-like, and the brake pedal action is mushy rather than direct.

The five-speed manual gearbox is well matched to the V8 engine, and when the higher fifth gear was fixed in 2017, the LC76 is simple to drive on open roads and makes overtakes with ease. However, I wouldn’t mind seeing another gear in this machine.

Because it is a tall, boxy wagon that monsters through the air rather than gliding through it like a 4WD ninja, it is on the noisier side of things.
