The Biggest Thing Going For the Sienna
You’re still perplexed as to what makes this minivan different from others. It’s a hybrid, to start. but not the typical kind. The Toyota is able to rail curves thanks to the Sienna’s electric rear motor, which sends its instantaneous torque to one (or both) of the back wheels and aids in maintaining a straighter path. Downshift the six-speed autobox, point the car toward the apex, and apply little gas power as you toss it through a curve. Now get ready to have your mind completely blown by how excellently the Sienna carves. Ahem. You would never attempt this with children around, of course. When they’re not, however, moderately firm steering and an incredibly smooth drivetrain make the car feel much livelier than it actually should. Shhh! Tell no one that driving is enjoyable.
In addition, it has been elevated for off-road use. Its 6.9 inches of ground clearance virtually towers above the paltry 4.5 inches of a Honda Odyssey. It’s true that you wouldn’t take it on the Baja Ten Billion (don’t look it up on Google), but with to its slightly beefier suspension and greater ride height, it was nevertheless able to safely and quickly navigate a washed-out, muddy fire road during a torrential downpour.

Compared to SUVs, minivans have clear advantages. One has a completely flat floor. Toyota was able to create a distinctive double-decker console between the two front seats because to this configuration. The shifter, two cup holders, a traditional USB connector, a wireless charger, and other controls are located on the top half. A soft, gripping rubber matt underneath has a superior hold on a bag or backpack. A closeable container that can also accommodate a smaller handbag or anything else you wish to keep out of sight is located behind that. To help you see everything going on behind you, Toyota incorporates a parabolic mirror behind the rearview and a feature called Driver Easy Speak. In order to poll your family about where they want to eat supper, you may Voice-of-God your voice to all three rows using this device. That also means that, while on a cross-country road trip, you may subject your kids to the whole Backstreet Boys discography, though there may be Geneva Convention footnotes that forbid such conduct.

You can equip your Sienna with an HD ceiling-mounted screen that accepts HDMI inputs, two remote controls, and wireless headphones if your kids want to drown out your sound preferences. But Toyota included dual 120V (1500W) power outlets, which are enough juice to charge a full-fledged laptop, as well as seven (!) USB ports tucked away from stem to stern because they understand that could only mean conflict between a pair of pre-adolescents. Not to mention beverage-friendly cubbies wherever you turn. That includes both inboard and outboard for the young ones so that even a child in a carseat may access her drink container. Get the row two long-sliding captain’s chairs if your children are a little older. These feature a 25-inch fore-and-aft range, which is also very flexible (imagine having more space for strollers or children’s bikes behind the second row).
Pitfalls
There is no getting past the fact that the Sienna still functions and looks like a minivan. You probably need a larger ride if you have two or more children. The problem is that a large SUV will often only obtain, at best, a mediocre 20 to 25 miles per gallon. That hurts the environment and makes filling up at the pump difficult. One option is to get the Kia Carnival if the curving body of the Toyota makes your soul hurt. It’s an SUV that is actually a minivan. However, with gas costs rising more than a dollar per gallon just since last fall, that discrepancy is tough to ignore. Its combined 22mpg is about 40% worse than the Toyota’s 35mpg.
The Bottom Line
There are no seven-passenger EVs that are fairly priced and even remotely comparable to the capacity and capacities of the Sienna. AWD, hybrid technology, and the increased ground clearance improve a van we already adore, and if you’ve ever dealt with the inconvenience of a congested, bulky, gas-guzzling SUV, you already know the truth: You need a minivan. This one checks off every need and then some.
