The upgrades are familiar because they are familiar. Previously, Subaru’s optional Performance Package for the BRZ, the 86’s sibling, was paired with the TRD Edition of the previous 86. It seems that Toyota will now merely offer the equipment as an option, much like Subaru has. The TRD Handling Package costs $1,270 for the 86 GT variant and starts at $2,320 for the base model. Of note, only automobiles equipped with the six-speed manual are eligible for the package. It’s your loss if you choose the six-speed automatic.
The manual transmission also unlocks an additional 5 horsepower, bringing the total to 205 hp as opposed to 200 hp with the automatic. The new model year makes no changes to that. Since Subaru only sells its Performance Package as a $1,195 option on the top-of-the-line BRZ Limited, Toyota’s plan is noteworthy. The 86 will cost somewhat less to equip with the same equipment than the BRZ in 2019; a base 86 with the handling package costs $30,170, while a BRZ Limited with the optional package costs $30,725 (as of this writing). The 86 continues to be the Toyobaru family’s most affordable model.
