What mattress size will fit inside a minivan?
Although it is not the most affordable choice, we made the conscious decision to not cut corners when it came to the essential purchase of a minivan rather than an RV or trailer. And the most crucial factor is likely to be comfort when sleeping.
An advantage of a foam mattress It is quite cozy. It is four inches of nothing but foam joy. I can’t wait to reflect about this while I sleep. Indeed, I am eager to spend the night in our van! It might sound crazy, but it’s true.
*Update: These mattresses are quite comfortable; we’ve taken them on several long camping excursions. The mattress is excellent, and we’ve camped consecutively for as long as 15 days. After that, we were merely seeking for a hotel room for some more space because the trip’s weather was poor.
Another great advantage is the fold-down mattress for campers. When we want to put up our tables and chairs on a rainy day or at night when we want to be inside relaxing, it quickly folds up in a matter of seconds, leaving us with our space.

If the third-row seats are removed and the mattress is slightly bent, the Dodge Grand Caravan, Chrysler Pacifica, Toyota Sienna, Honda Odyssey, and the Kia Sedona can all often fit a full-size mattress. However, because every vehicle is unique, measuring the space is your best bet.
The foldable mattress we chose measures 75 inches by 25 inches by four inches when it is totally flat, giving us enough to fully extend our feet. It is little narrower than one full size times two, and it fits exactly in the Pacifica. Be aware that this can be a problem if you are taller than six feet. But neither of us needs to be concerned about that!

Cargo Room
Thanks to Chrysler’s Stow ‘n Go seating system, the Pacifica provides 32.3 cubic feet of cargo capacity with the back two rows up and 87.5 cubic feet with the third row folded flat into the floor. That gave us plenty of room for our two enormous plastic storage bins full of camping stuff (excluding the tent; more on that later), one full-size cooler, one full-size suitcase, one weekend bag, and two very large backpacks containing inflatable standup paddleboards and other gear.
Along with my parents, two more luggage, and a ton of other things we were getting go of (who we were also getting rid of on a pre-camping stop in Detroit).
Sleeping Space
The Pacifica features a sizable 140.5 cubic feet of cargo space thanks to the Stow ‘n Go seating in the second and third rows. We were able to fit a queen-size air mattress on the somewhat flat surface. Due to the tight fit, our mattress slightly bowed in the middle, however a full would fit wonderfully. In any event, we had enough area for two people to sleep pretty comfortably, with room for our personal belongings at the foot (I’m 6 feet tall). Despite a little dip in the floor between the collapsible second and third seats, it was comfortable to put our heads toward the rear liftgate and feet toward the front.
Cubbies, Compartments and Cupholders
When you live out of your car, you don’t want your keys, wallet, phone, change, or other little items to get lost in the shuffle, so the back of the Pacifica has plenty of nooks and compartments for them. There are also multiple cupholders, which are useful for placing a water bottle conveniently so you won’t have to get up in the middle of the night to grab a drink when you wake up thirsty.
Privacy Please
Camping during a well-known holiday weekend, like we did, could make your campsite fairly crowded with others who shared your plan, which could lead to more people passing by at night and peeking at you while you sleep.
Fortunately, our Pacifica had retractable sunshades that gave us the impression that we had at least some degree of privacy by blocking enough of the rear windows. In order to somewhat obstruct the view out the windshield, we also placed a blanket over the front seats. (These will also assist in preventing you from being awakened in the middle of your morning hangover, er, dreams.)
Rain-schmain
stuck indoors looking for protection from the weather? So fortunate should you be! The Pacifica’s Uconnect Theater features two seatback-mounted touchscreen displays with eight games, including checkers, sudoku, solitaire, tic-tac-toe, math flash cards, and a hangman-related variation, so you can pass the time while it rains. Additionally, you can use a remote to control DVD or Blu-ray players to watch movies. A 115-volt three-prong electrical outlet, several USB and HDMI ports, and other features ensure that you may use your own personal gadgets.
Room and Board
You need to be able to move your boat around if you’re going to live in a van next to the river. A 10-foot-4-inch SUP board that was completely inflated could fit inside the Pacifica with all of the rows folded and turned on its side with the nose sitting between the front seats. You could definitely fit another one in there as well, but the ride would undoubtedly be uncomfortable and questionably legal.
Pro Tips
If you sleep in a van, you won’t have a covered overhang to keep items outside without getting wet, or a place to wipe off your feet or leave your shoes. As a result, you might want to bring a rug to leave outside the door for when you enter and exit, as well as perhaps a tarp to cover up items you want to keep dry but won’t fit in the front captain’s chairs. Additionally, the overnight temperature for us was 56 degrees, which was just ideal for sleeping. However, bear in mind that when the temperature rises, you may have to open up to the outside air and insects more frequently.
Conclusion: You don’t need a tent at all! You won’t need anything else to be content besides the Chrysler Pacifica and a place to park it.
