Is there a manual transmission on the Toyota 86?
Due to its low weight, the 86 has a fixed roof, an aluminum hood, and a trunk rather than a hatchback. The boxer engine is situated low in a front engine/rear drive layout to improve driving dynamics, resulting in a weight distribution of 53% in front and 47% in the rear with a low center of mass height.
The engine in the 86 is a naturally aspirated flat-four engine with the Toyota D-4S injection system, which employs gasoline direct injection. It goes by the Toyota designation 4U-GSE and the Subaru code FA20 (GDI). Its front-engine, rear-wheel-drive arrangement produces 200 PS (197 bhp; 147 kW) at 7,000 rpm and 151 lbft (205 Nm) of torque at 6,400 rpm. Two 6-speed transmissions are available for the 86, BRZ, and FR-S: an in-house developed Toyota TL70 manual transmission (based on Aisin AI’s AZ6) and an Aisin-Warner A960E automatic transmission that has been modified from the Lexus IS 250 transmission. While the latter makes use of a conventional wet torque converter design, its software has been developed to imitate the reaction of a dual-clutch transmission. Three different settings are available on the automatic transmission: Sport, Snow, and Normal. On most versions, a limited slip differential in the torsen form is standard.
Depending on the sales market, the vehicles are available with either 17″ alloy wheels shod with Michelin Primacy HP tyres in 215/45 size or 16″ steel and alloy wheels shod with Yokohama dB Decibel E70 tyres in 205/55 size. Instead, 18″ forged aluminum wheels are available on the limited-edition Toyota Racing Development (TRD) GT86 models, which, depending on the market, can be fitted with either Yokohama Advan Sport or Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tires in the 225/40 size. Models and nations have different braking systems:
- US market, EU markets, higher trim levels on most other markets; dual-piston front sliding calipers, single-piston rear sliding calipers, and 294/290 mm ventilated disks (front/rear)
- Lower trim levels on most other markets, with dual-piston front sliding calipers, single-piston rear sliding calipers, and 277 mm vented front disks and 286 mm solid rear disks.
- Performance Pack cars have front/rear ventilated disks measuring 326/316 millimeters, four-piston fixed front calipers, and two-piston fixed rear calipers.
- 4 piston rear fixed calipers, 345 mm ventilated front disks, and 6 piston front fixed disks are also features of the TRD Edition automobiles.
Front MacPherson struts and rear double wishbones make up the suspension system.
The 86 was improved in 2016 to 153 kW (205 bhp; 208 PS) and 212 Nm for the 2017 model year (156 lbft). From 4.1 to 4.3, the final drive ratio was decreased.
What makes a Toyota 86 unique?
Toyota changes the 86 range for 2020 and adds additional standard features. Every model now comes with a better infotainment system that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Hakone Edition, the 86’s highest trim, comes with distinctive green paint, unique 17-inch wheels, and trim-specific interior accents. Is the GR86 available in a manual?
The 2023 GR86 is equipped with a Subaru naturally aspirated horizontally opposed four-cylinder, just like the first-generation vehicle. The last GR86 we tested reached 60 mph in 5.4 seconds and covered a quarter-mile in 14.0 seconds, but acceleration in the prior generation was fairly quick at 6.2 seconds. An improved 2.4-liter engine with 228 horsepower is responsible for that improvement. The GR86 still comes with a six-speed manual transmission as standard, with a six-speed automatic transmission being an option. The six-speed automatic took seven tenths of a second longer to reach 60 mph than the manual. We observed during our initial test drive that the more potent engine felt livelier and sounded better, and that the car’s nimble handling offered thrills both on the road and on the Monticello Motor Club race track. The suspension is forgiving enough to function as a daily driver despite the car’s excellent handling abilities.
The GR86 is either automatic or manual.
Despite being slower than the manual version, Toyota’s GR86 with an automatic transmission is nevertheless a joy to drive. The fact that Toyota anticipates selling more GR86 coupes equipped with the optional six-speed automatic transmission than with the basic six-speed is not surprising.
Is the Subaru BRZ automatic available?
