The Cars creative design team collaborated with the professionals at Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur and Style Porsche to create a distinctive and entertaining 911 that will help generate money for good causes. It was inspired by the playful Porsche from the Cars animated film series.
For Porsche enthusiasts, Sally Carrera, the stunning blue 911 (type 996), was the series’ highlight character in the popular Pixar/Disney animated film franchise Cars. Sally was only ever offered in CGI or as a single static, full-scale, non-working model up until this point. However, a one-of-a-kind Porsche 911 Carrera GTS that was inspired by Sally Carrera has just been unveiled. It will be auctioned off at this year’s Monterey Car Week in California, and the money raised will go to two distinct charities.
The movie series’ producers, Pixar Animation Studios, the Sonderwunsch team at Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur in Stuttgart, and designers from Style Porsche in Weissach worked together to create the car, which was given the name 911 Sally Special.
According to Jay Ward, Creative Director of Franchise at Pixar Animation Studios, “We determined early on that we wanted to build a perfectly drivable 911 – influenced by Sally Carrera, but just not an exact clone.” “Our inspiration came from the fact that Sally Carrera enjoys driving. We pondered what Sally would look like if she were created as a road-approved model today.”
The end result is a unique Porsche 911 Carrera GTS with all of the custom features and meticulous attention to detail that we have come to expect from the professionals at Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur and their Style Porsche partners. And if someone wins the auction, they will soon be the proud owner of it.

This is the real account of how Porsche created the Sally Carrera from automobiles.
To create Sally, Porsche and Disney went through a lengthy design process.
Porsche and Disney revealed the unique, limited-edition Porsche 911 Sally Special a few weeks ago. It is obvious that this one-of-a-kind Porsche 911 is modeled on the character Sally Carrera from the Cars movie series because it was just auctioned off at RM Sotheby’s for an astounding sum. The special edition was more than simply a blue 911; it had design cues from Sally herself, including her tattoo, and it was intended to bring her character to life, as much as possible, in actual automobile form.
Sally resides in Radiator Springs and drives a 2002 Porsche 911 Carrera. She belonged to the 911’s 991-generation and was unmistakably inspired by the legendary sports vehicle. But adding some eyes and a mouth to an existing automobile wasn’t as easy as that. Porsche and Disney underwent a rather extensive design process to bring Sally to life because she needed to be correctly constructed to fit within the Cars universe. We now know how Porsche and Disney went about creating a tremendously popular character in the world of Cars thanks to research from The Drive.
The one-of-a-kind Porsche 911-based vehicle will be auctioned off for charitable purposes.
In the 2006 Pixar film Cars, the Sally Carrera character made her debut as an attorney who leaves her hectic life in Los Angeles for the sleepy community of Radiator Springs along Route 66. Sally, a 2002 Porsche 911 Carrera with a reduced wheelbase, was modeled after Dawn Welch of Rock Cafe in Oklahoma rather than a real person. The movie’s baby blue Porsche, benevolent and feisty, plays Lightning McQueen, a brilliant red Piston Cup race vehicle with a voracious thirst for speed.
Porsche and Pixar Animation Studios have partnered together for a one-of-a-kind effort to transform the animated character into a real-life, street-legal automobile in honor of Sally Carrera’s 20th anniversary, or rather, her original model year, not her role in the film. The Pixar-inspired Sally 2.0 will be unveiled at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas, in 2022. It will be a unique model based on the most recent 992-generation Porsche 911.
When finished, the Sally 2.0, based in 992, will be auctioned off for charity, with the money going to Girls Inc., a non-profit that supports girls and young women. Additionally, the funds from the sale will help families affected by the situation in Ukraine through the USA for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. Sally’s robins-egg-blue (Sally Blue) paint, by coincidence, has a striking resemblance to the blue color of the Ukrainian flag in this regard.
What began as a playful project is now taking shape thanks to the initiative of Cars production designer Bob Pauley and franchise creative director Jay Ward, as well as Style Porsche and Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur. Sally Carrera dedicates herself to serving the community in the movie. She was the perfect person to create this unique Porsche supporting humanitarian causes because of her altruistic traits.
The Zuffenhausen Porsche factory will create the one-of-a-kind road vehicle in Sally Carrera’s honor, and RM Sotheby’s will conduct the sale. Porsche Design is creating a limited-edition watch to go along with the 911 Sally 2.0; it will have distinctive style and design cues from the automobile.
When Porsche removes the cover, we’re eager to see the real-life Sally 2.0, especially in light of the playful design notes and sketches the company shared (pictured above), which are full of witty hints like “shift!” (arrow pointing to what appears to be a manual transmission shift lever! ), “custom updated Sally wheels! Cool,” and “tattoo on wing.” Watch this space for more developments.
Is Sally a 911 from the movie Cars?
Despite the fact that Disney and Pixar’s Cars premiered in theaters in the summer of 2006, the movie’s production actually began in 2002, when production designer Bob Pauley originally drew the character of Sally Carrera. Sally is an anthropomorphic Porsche 911 Carrera, as her last name suggests.
Sally is a Porsche, but why?
Sally was always intended to be a pleasant blue 911, and of course she is a car that can keep up with her love interest in the movie, Lightning McQueen, and vice versa for McQueen. With the engine at the back, there is no huge grille at the front of the automobile, giving it a very smooth and clean appearance, which the Pixar studio liked. Bob Pauley, a production designer at Pixar, and Jay Ward, the creative director, claimed that this gave Sally more freedom for expressiveness than, say, Sarge the Jeep.
Sally was originally going to be a Porsche 993 generation, but Pixar wanted a modern vehicle like McQueen, so they settled on the 996 generation. Since 85% of Porsche’s customers were men, Porsche had to accept the design, and at first they expressed skepticism regarding Sally’s function as the 911. However, Ward and Pixar retaliated by saying, “It sounds like the area in which you need to grow is in terms of female clients.” Sally was the first licensed car accepted for the film, four years before its premiere, since it struck a chord with Porsche, who liked it.

In Cars, what is Sally’s tattoo?
“Sally decided to start over in the little hamlet of Radiator Springs after growing weary of her fast-paced life as a successful lawyer in Los Angeles. She plans to continue operating the Cozy Cone Motel after purchasing it and restoring it to its former glory. If necessary, she would repair each building in the town.”
“Sally still has some of the pinstriping from her early tattoos. It serves as a reminder of her fast-paced existence in California and how content she is to be driving in the slow lane, even though she is a little embarrassed by it right now.”
