You would get bored listening to me talk about this subject all day. Agate grey 718 Cayman GTS was my previous vehicle till I recently switched to a brand-new Guards red Carrera 4. (992). Let me start by saying that I adore both cars and think they are both fantastic vehicles to drive.
The 911 was significantly more expensive than the Cayman. My extensively equipped Cayman GTS cost me PS76K UK new, and my similarly equipped Carrera 4 cost me PS102K, thus the 911 is significantly more expensive. By the time you add options, a 992 911 is really impossible to get for less than PS100,000. I thought about obtaining a 718 GT4, and I could have specified one of those for PS86K with bucket seats and a fire extinguisher, so even a GT4 would have been more affordable than a Carrera 4.
There are advantages and disadvantages to both vehicles. The 718 is plainly less expensive and offers greater value than the 911. However, it’s also true that the 718’s cold start is superior to that of the 911’s flat six engine. The 911 sounds far better under hard acceleration. The flat 6’s noise is glorious under hard acceleration and addictive, but the Cayman did overrun more and I loved the overruns on my 718, even though the 911 sports exhaust is getting better over time. The 718’s explode into life with an angry snarl. The 911 revs perfectly, and that sounds fantastic. Both the 911 and the Cayman have noisy cabins, but the Cayman was louder inside. The 911 grips the road better, while the Cayman felt more focused and like a racing car. Both vehicles are incredibly well balanced. Both move quickly (370bhp Cayman vs 385bhp Carrera 4 which is slightly heavier and bigger). The Cayman received many compliments and expressions of admiration, but the 911 received significantly more than the Cayman. The Cayman’s interior was fantastic, especially with the GTS leather pack, but the new 991’s interior is much better, and its infotainment system is top-notch. I miss the Cayman’s tiny rear boot, but the 911’s back seats can fit a pair of golf clubs and small children, making it more useful. I adore the new 911’s enormously large tires, which are 21″ 305s at the back, but all 911s, it seems, have noticeable tyre roar. Although I never found the Cayman uncomfortable, the 911 is more comfortable.
Overall, I enjoyed driving both vehicles, but I think the 911 comes out on top since it is so enjoyable to drive. Everyone loves the 911, but it was PS36K more expensive than the Cayman GTS, making it more expensive than a Golf R. Was the money used wisely? I’m not sure. Right now, the 911 residuals are great, so perhaps. There are undoubtedly aspects of my Cayman GTS that I miss, even though I enjoyed every second of having it. The Cayman is undoubtedly louder, angrier, and more intense. That is a nice thing.
