Several of the neighborhood bad boys can be seen outside my daughter’s home using scanning equipment to copy the signals from their M3 and X5’s comfort entry system. Thankfully, the keys were kept in a key safe resembling a Faraday cage.
It makes the car less secure than without it, but if, like me, you prefer to keep your keys in your pocket or bag rather than having to search for them every time you get in or out of the vehicle, you must balance the ease of use against the chance of it being stolen.
Since installing this function on my automobiles ten years ago, none of them have been stolen. So far, so good.
The Porsche response to this is anything but tasteful. In essence, you can start the automobile by turning the key that is practically stuck into the ignition slot while still being able to open the car with the key in your pocket.
I believe I’m one of the fortunate ones since, up until now, I’ve always been able to locate my key in my pocket.
I purposefully omitted it from my car’s specifications, and I’m happy that Porsche at least gives us the choice of whether or not to have it (some manufacturers fit it as standard). I didn’t want to spend PS450 to make things easy for burglars after having a BMW 7-series stolen from my driveway. The wireless encryption code on the key might be intercepted and used to unlock or steal the car, as Porsche themselves admit.

I actually have the reverse problem. I guess my movement trips the foot gesture region sometimes while I’m standing and loading items, and the door closes even if I’m still loading stuff!
My struggles with this feature led me to some observations.
The actual area is not further inside the car, but rather quite near the edge of the bumper. It seems to be better triggered by a rapid “hokey pokey” foot in and out rather than a sweeping side to side action. Additionally, as I already indicated, you must avoid that location when loading or unloading because if you do, the hatch will begin to close on your head.
Having previously owned a 2019 Audi Q8, I found it difficult to engage in the foot gesture, but patience was a virtue.
The foot motion is used to engage the rear tailgate both up and down, as stated in our owner’s manual.
I only learned today that the engine has to be running in order to close the tailgate using the button in the driver’s door.
Jeepers, Porsche People, I’ve read that you should keep the tailgate closed when the engine is running.
