2022 Porsche 911 GTS Gets More Hardcore in Testing

Porsche has mastered the skill of nitpicking. There are no fewer than 21 different 911 variations for the 2022 model year, ranging from straightforward to outlandish. The GTS expertly handles this range, providing performance that falls in between the Carrera S/4S and the GT3. However, this year’s upgrades give the GTS a sharper edge, bringing it closer to the GT3.

The GTS trim has traditionally been distinguished by a carefully chosen set of significant performance enhancements, such as a sport exhaust, dynamic engine mounts, stronger brakes, and, of course, more power. Porsche increases horsepower and torque by 30 over the Carrera S by boosting pressure from 16.0 to 18.6 psi. Our 911 GTS test vehicle accelerated to 60 mph in 2.8 seconds thanks to the twin-turbo 3.0-liter flat-473 six’s horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. At 128 mph, the quarter-mile was completed in 10.9 seconds. Regardless of the drive mode chosen, the standard eight-speed dual-clutch automatic is eerily foresighted in its performance. Even if we still prefer using the free seven-speed manual transmission, there is no match for the automatic’s efficiency, especially on the racetrack.

The new GTS-exclusive lightweight option ($8690) promises to remove an additional 55 pounds from the curb weight, in part by removing the rear seat, if the increase in horsepower isn’t enough to win that last tenth of a second. In Southern California, I spent a week driving a Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Convertible, enjoying a tremendous variety of roads and lots of smiles. One of those vehicles that stays in your mind months after you drive it. The GTS is a top-tier sports car that provides the finest possible 911 road performance.

I couldn’t resist racing the car back and forth during our video review shoot to acquire more footage, and I did so while applying enough throttle to feel the turbos. The GTS truly comes into its own once the boost starts to work. Porsche claims 473 horsepower, but I’ve driven vehicles with more than 600 horsepower that didn’t feel as powerful at the time.
