If you can find a Boxster that has overcome the early engine issues, I believe it makes an excellent first Porsche. It won’t be as inexpensive to fix as a Miata, for sure.
Young people shouldn’t be prevented from owning a Porsche as long as they are aware of the risks and have money set aside for maintenance. A PCA member who is 18 years old owns two vintage Porsche 944s. Although both are driveable and one is actually rather attractive, he uses one as his main vehicle and the other only for components. The newest 944 would be 17 years old, while there may still be a few 968s floating around that were updated versions of the same vehicle. But it has the benefit of an easily accessible engine compartment (unlike the Boxster), fantastic ergonomics, and excellent handling.
