Your non-heated wheel does not contain all the necessary parts for the heated steering wheel to function, even though the parts from your heated wheel will fit the heated frame. The two most important components that must be included in the heated wheel are: 1) the original electronic control unit that is housed in the heated steering wheel, and 2) the wiring harness from a heated steering wheel that has the correct connector for the heating circuit. (As I said in my initial post, you also need to replace the clock spring behind the steering wheel.)
The key to appropriate coding is to install a heated steering wheel with the control unit configured for the steering wheel heat option as it was programmed at the factory. Your non-heated wheel’s control unit lacks the required coding. (Note: Below the center of the steering wheel, the control unit is positioned.
A “new” OEM replacement heated steering wheel may or may not come programmed. The dealer may need to code a new OEM wheel, and they will only do this if the vehicle originally had hot steering. To make this work, you must locate a suitable old heated steering wheel that was factory-coded. The additional connector (two contact plug), which hooks into the clock spring at the 8 o’clock position, is also a part of the heated steering wheel wire harness. You should be fine if the heated steering wheel you are obtaining has a full wire harness and a control unit already installed (you did not indicate if that item was included with the replacement steering wheel).
On the bottom of the steering wheel, between the lowest two spokes, is a switch that activates the heated wheel. Between the spokes, you insert your finder and press the tiny button.
