Porsche claims that when you order the car, you have the option of starting the Paint to Sample procedure at your dealer. Beyond the car’s standard color options, more than 100 hues are available.
Porsche offers the Paint to Sample Plus, which broadens the color palette to almost any shade you can imagine, if you’re looking for a slightly unusual color. You will have to provide a paint sample to the dealer under this more expensive option, who will then send it to the Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur team. Porsche then does durability tests on the freshly applied finish to make sure this new paint job is up to par.
Although the ordering process is somewhat tedious, it starts the process for your customized 911. Porsche prepares the body and chassis for the finishing before loading the spray guns and letting the paint fly. Degreasing and phosphate coating are applied to panels to assist prevent corrosion.
Porsche applies a priming coat after the body has been coated and is prepared for painting. Porsche chooses the primer based on the final color, just like any custom paint shop would: lighter finishes are paired with lighter primers, and darker finishes are paired with darker primers. Porsche follows the primer with the color and clear coatings, then bakes the finished product at a maximum temperature of 392 degrees Fahrenheit.
It ultimately depends on what you’re aiming to get done and how badly you want to distinguish your freshly constructed automobile from the competition if you choose to participate in the more ambitious Paint to Sample Plus program, which will add about $10,000 to those costs.
