I can see a figure in the repair manual with the O2 sensor on the driver’s side representing bank 1 and the passenger side representing bank 2.
On a number of other forums about cats and other repairs, a lot of users claim that Bank 2 is the Left side? Wouldn’t the driver’s side be on the left?
Can someone please tell me which is which for sure. Although I tend to believe the instructions, I know it is not flawless.

On the side of cylinder one is Bank 1. Typically, cylinder one is located on the driver’s side. But in this situation, you need to be cautious. It’s not always a defective sensor just because the O2 sensor was listed in the code. One sensor is not a defective sensor, for example, when the code is P0171: sensor indicates lean, bank 1. That is a reliable sensor informing you that bank 1 of the engine is running lean. If you receive a different code, the sensor may be to blame.

When referring to any work done on the engine, you must be facing it. At least, this is how I was trained professionally. However, working on the chassis is done while seated. They are so in opposition. If you were to replace the back sensor on bank 1, which is the catalyst monitoring sensor, it would be on the left side facing the engine, which is cylinder number 1, and on the right side, which is bank 2. A sulfated converter and perhaps a sensor are indicated by a rotten egg smell. For your cat, I’d strongly advise an injector cleaning with the appropriate de-sulferization ingredient. Once the sensor has been replaced, you should be good to go.

In the VQ40, bank 1 is the passenger side and bank 2 is the driver. You got both upstream and downstream right. If a skid plate is not bolted in the way, you should have no trouble getting to the downstream bank 2 sensor. I can see mine even with the Hefty skid attached, but to have quick access, I’d need to remove the skid or get creative with some swivel extensions.
On what side of the car is bank 2?
Each car has a different version of where Bank 2 is. Depending on the vehicle’s make, model, and driver orientation (left-hand or right-hand drive). To merely state that it is located on the passenger side would be presumptuous (although this is predominantly true for rear-wheel drive). The side of an engine having the cylinder firing orders 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 is referred to as Bank 2 by definition. The B1S1 (Bank 1 Sensor 1) placement is opposite of this.
You can fairly well pinpoint the position of Bank 2 by locating Cylinder 2. Finding Bank 2 in front-wheel drive cars is more challenging than in rear-wheel drive cars, though. It is crucial to identify the engine’s “front side,” or the area nearest to the crankshaft pulley. Although the “front side” is typically closer to the glass than the radiator, not all front-wheel-drive automobiles will have this configuration.
How much is a catalytic converter for a Nissan Xterra worth?
Estimated cost to replace a catalytic converter in a Nissan Xterra. Nissan Xterra catalytic converter replacements typically cost between $1,845 and $1,891. While parts are priced at $1,669, labor costs are projected to be between $176 and $222.
Which bank on an engine is bank 1?
In the world of automobiles, Bank 1 refers to the bank with the first cylinder, i.e., it is the bank with the first cylinder. This is the sole cylinder bank on an inline four-cylinder engine. On an inline six-cylinder engine, two banks could appear in the scan tool data even if there is only one real cylinder bank in practice.
The BMW M54 engine, which uses two distinct exhaust manifolds in a single-cylinder bank arrangement, is a good illustration of this. Bank 1 refers to the front three cylinders of the M54, which house the number one cylinder.
Likewise, Bank 2 refers to the back three cylinders. The rule is the same for engines with opposed cylinder banks, like a V8 engine, in that bank one is always the bank with the first cylinder. To learn the cylinder arrangement for a certain engine, consult the service manual.
Which bank is on the left side of the engine?
The front bank is another name for the left cylinder bank. It’s cylinders 2, 4, and 6. The radiator is located closest to the left bank. The rear bank is another name for the right cylinder bank.
Where are banks 1 and 2 situated?
Simply put, banks 1 and 2 refer to the engine’s sides. For accurate information on where banks 1 and 2 are located, consult your owner’s manual or a service manual. Most frequently, bank 1 houses the first cylinder from the front of the engine, and bank 2 is the opposite side. View numerous potential setups in the images below.
Tech Tip: The area of the engine closest to the front of the car is not the front. That side has a crankshaft pulley on it (also called the harmonic balancer). No matter how the car is set up, whether it has front- or rear-wheel drive, or where the engine is located.
Typically, the appropriate O2 sensors can be found in each of these banks. Only one bank is present in 4 cylinder engines, with some Subarus being an exception. There is just one bank available, so bank 1 should be chosen when you notice codes that frequently refer to bank 1.

Which comes first, the catalytic converter or bank 1?
Each car has a different number of O2 sensors, although all cars have at least two.
This is due to the fact that each car contains a minimum of one downstream and one upstream oxygen sensor (sensor 1). (sensor 2).
While sensor 2 is placed after the catalytic converter, sensor 1 is placed before it.
By reading the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) and identifying the appropriate bank in accordance with the previous instructions, you can identify the malfunctioning O2 sensor when reading a DTC.
A DTC that reads “Bank 1 sensor 2,” for instance, indicates that the O2 sensor is situated next to cylinder 1 after the catalytic converter.
The O2 sensor, on the other hand, is situated before the catalytic converter, on the same side as cylinder 1, according to a DTC that states “Bank 1 sensor 1,” on the other hand.
The O2 sensor is situated on the other side of bank 1 after the catalytic converter, according to the same reasoning, therefore “Bank 2 sensor 2” would show this location.

Taxes, fees, and your specific make and model are not taken into account in this price range, which is based on national averages for all automobiles. There can also be a requirement for related repairs or maintenance. Use RepairPal’s Fair Price Estimator for a more precise quote based on your make, model, and location.
Are sensors 1 from banks 1 and 2 identical?
Bank 1 The first sensor, which is closest to the engine, is Sensor 1. On Bank 1 denotes that the cylinders 1, 3, 5, 7, etc. are on the engine side.
The second sensor on the engine’s exhaust pipe, often located after the catalytic converter, is known as Bank 1 Sensor 2. On Bank 1 denotes that the cylinders 1, 3, 5, 7, etc. are on the engine side.
The first sensor nearest to the engine is Bank 2 Sensor 1. On Bank 2 denotes that the cylinders 2, 4, 6, 8, etc. are on the engine side.
The second sensor on the engine’s exhaust pipe, often located after the catalytic converter, is known as Bank 2 Sensor 2. On Bank 2 denotes that the cylinders 2, 4, 6, 8, etc. are on the engine side.
P0420 or bank 1 is it?
What the P0420 Code Indicates Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)” is the meaning of the code P0420. Simply explained, this code means that the computer in your automobile has noticed poor performance from the Bank 1 catalytic converter.
A bank 1 sensor 1 code is caused by what?
O2 Sensor Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1, Sensor 1) is the meaning of the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0130. It means that the PCM may have identified an issue with the circuit or the oxygen sensor voltage (or the air-fuel ratio sensor).
What does it mean to be a lean bank 1 or lean bank 2?
Code P0171 denotes a lean fuel mixture in Bank 1 of the engine. P0174 indicates a lean fuel mixture in Bank 2 of the engine. On the same side of the engine as Engine Cylinder 1 is Engine Bank 1. The opposing side of the engine is Engine Bank 2.
What code is sensor 2 in bank 1?
The Engine Control Module (ECM) assigns the OBD code P0036, which stands for “HO2S Heater Control Circuit – Bank 1 Sensor 2,” when it notices a potential issue with the bank. one additional sensor or sensor 2-circuit heater control
What is bank 2 sensor 2’s O2 sensor?
O2 Sensor Circuit High Voltage is the meaning of Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0158 (Bank 2, Sensor 2). The O2 sensor 2 measures the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gases leaving the catalytic converter and is the downstream O2 sensor (cat)
How can you identify the bad O2 sensor?
- Check engine light that is illuminated. If you have a malfunctioning oxygen sensor, your dashboard’s bright orange Check Engine light will often glow.
- poor gas mileage

Is seafoam able to aid O2 sensors?
With SEA FOAM MOTOR TREATMENT, you can reduce the amount of unclean, unburned carbon that accumulates in your fuel system and damages your O2 sensors.
Can an O2 sensor be cleaned?
An essential component of your car’s pollution control system is an oxygen sensor. Simply explained, an oxygen sensor measures the amount of emissions your automobile emits and transmits that data to the management computer in the engine. There are at least two sensors in your car, and when one of them malfunctions, you need to take action. Can an oxygen sensor be cleaned? Contrary to what you may have heard or read, such sensors should be changed when they malfunction.
