Even though we are aware that it is now illegal to own one in the US until at least 2024, when the first R34s will be permitted for import under the 25 Year Rule, aficionados continue to hunt for ways around the law. Last week, I traveled to Japan to test drive the Nissan GT-R; this week, you can read more about the car’s capabilities in the magazine (there is no doubt that it is a monstrous machine). But while I was there, I made a startling discovery: this new Nissan is incredibly affordable in its home market, not just when compared to how much it costs here, but also when compared to its Japanese competitors.
The new GT-R costs 7.7 million Yen (PS31,000) in Japan, a Porsche 911 Turbo just under 20 million Yen, and the new M3 is priced around 12 million Yen (PS48,000) (PS80,000). Even the Corvette Z06, which was formerly the cheapest so-called supercar available for purchase in Japan, is more expensive than the new GT-R, coming in at just under 9 million Yen (PS36,000).
In terms of technical sophistication and development expenditures, contrasting the new GT-R with the Corvette Z06 is rather akin to contrasting a PS20 Casio watch with a Rolex Daytona. There IS no equivalent. Nissan Japan, however, is adamant that it will continue to make money on every single GT-R it sells, even those that customers pay PS31,000 for in Japan.

Although vehicles like the Nissan 300ZX and 3000GT weren’t far behind the Skyline GT-R in terms of straight-line speed, it was their superior handling abilities that really set them apart (the 3000GT, for example, was really more of a grand tourer designed for high speed cruising and real-world bends, as opposed to the racetrack).
The Skyline has become so coveted and well-liked thanks in part to this outstanding performance. Even by today’s standards, the Skyline is still incredibly speedy even if modern vehicles have past it. It was groundbreaking and absolutely on the cutting edge of what was possible in terms of automotive performance at the time.
Although it’s debatable, there is a case to be made for the Nissan Skyline GT-R as the absolute apex of Japanese performance driving in the 1990s, and as such, it enjoys the popularity to match!
The Nissan Skyline is one of the most well-known Japanese performance vehicles of all time because it was the best of its age, similar to how Muhammad Ali is the most well-known boxer of all time because he was the best (or so he liked to boast).
Is there an R34 with left-hand drive?
With the exception of a few sparse sales in the UK, Hong Kong, Australia, and New Zealand, Nissan solely offered the Nissan Skyline for sale in Japan. Since right-hand drive vehicles are the norm in each of these nations, a left-hand drive version was never required.
But what can one do when some countries’ regulations forbid right-hand drive automobiles? Henri Helanto was the first person we are aware of to own a left-hand drive R32 GT-R. In the late 90s and early 2000s, he constructed an automobile by himself. During the same period, some vehicles had been switched to left-hand drive throughout the Middle East.
When MotoRex certified and imported the Nissan Skyline, they were not required to adjust the driver’s position because the US does not mandate left-hand drive vehicles. The right-hand-drive vehicles were right-hand-drive crash tested by MotoRex, and they are allowed to be driven as such in the US.
Not everyone feels at ease driving a right-hand-drive JDM vehicle in a left-hand-drive environment. We are aware of an R33 and an R34 GT-R that were left-hand drive conversions in the US. As far as we know, the R33 GT-R was sold and is still in the US. After being heavily modified in Australia, the R34 GT-R was then exported to the Philippines.
The US was responsible for this R34 GT-R. The intention of the person who did it was to convert it into a company, but in the early 2000s, there wasn’t much of a market for a left-hand drive Nissan Skyline.
Who would be interested in owning an R32, R33, or R34 Nissan Skyline GT-R with left-hand drive? Some people consider it to be blasphemous, while others simply wish to be able to operate a vehicle. Drive-through lanes, tolls, and left turns would all at least be simple. Passing would also be a little bit simpler on two-lane roads. However, we believe that a tiny number of people would truly desire to purchase or convert a Nissan Skyline to left-hand drive if it were not required by law.
