The team’s existence can be traced back to 1960, when they competed in Houston under the name Oilers. The Astrodome, the nation’s first multipurpose dome stadium, hosted the Oilers for almost 25 seasons. The Astrodome was one of the NFL’s smallest stadiums by the middle of the 1980s, which caused the Oilers, owned by Bud Adams, to grow impatient with it. Voters in Davidson County and the greater Nashville area passed a $144 million bond for stadium development on May 5, 1996.

The Oilers relocated from Houston to Tennessee after the 1996 campaign. Nashville did not have a stadium ready for the franchise, which was the sole issue.
