The Nissan Armada is the brand’s big, body-on-frame SUV with three rows. After undergoing a facelift in 2017, it now shares a platform with the Nissan Patrol sold outside of the United States and borrows design cues from the Infiniti QX80. For the title of best non-luxury three-row vehicle, the Armada competes against the Chevy Tahoe and its relatives, the Ford Expedition, Toyota Sequoia, and Dodge Durango. Not well at all. Overall, the 2020 Nissan Armada feels antiquated, not because of the sheetmetal but more because new three-row SUV rivals are outpacing it by a wide margin. Look at the new Ford Explorer or the Cadillac Escalade/Chevy Suburban. Far be it from me to discourage you from purchasing a body-on-frame SUV; while I enjoy them, there are a number of newer, more attractive, and fuel-efficient alternatives (this Armada is rated at 13/18/15 mpg, city, highway, combined).

Once the Nissan Armada adopted Infiniti design characteristics, it transformed from a blocky, traditional SUV to a sleek, curving traditional SUV. The Armada is a terrific deal because it is around $20,000 less expensive than its premium cousin. We used the Platinum trim, which starts at roughly $64K and costs $71,335 with extras.

Because the Armada is body-on-frame, it will handle and feel more comfortable on the road like a pickup truck. It has non-adjustable Hitachi shocks and double-wishbone suspension in the front and back. The Nissan Armada’s 8,500-pound towing capacity is outstanding.

Nothing will be agile in this class of vehicle. The Nissan Armada effectively absorbs bumps from the driver’s seat, but similar to the previous one I drove, it feels like the suspension is working very hard (and noisily) to maintain things that way. It doesn’t feel any slower or any faster than its rivals. If you’re shopping for an SUV of this size, features are definitely more important to you.

The Bose audio system with 13 speakers and a subwoofer is a standard feature of the 2020 Armada. A satellite radio, a CD player, and an 8-inch touchscreen are included as standard equipment. It has a rearview camera, keyless start and entry, and nine cupholders.

A rear-seat entertainment system with dual 8-inch DVD monitors, USB and HDMI ports, VTR jacks (two), two wireless headphones, and a remote control is included with the upgraded Platinum and Platinum Reserve 2020 Armadas in addition to leather seats, heated second-row seats, and a heated steering wheel.
