These complaints come at a time when other automakers are bringing back classic SUV nameplates for tough new models. Even many crossovers have gotten in on the off-road craze, as Ford recently brought back the Bronco and Land Rover recently brought back the Defender. For instance, the Kia Sorento now provides an X-Line aesthetic option, while the Toyota RAV4 now has a TRD Off-Road specification.

Following the launch of the Xterra’s second generation in 2005, sales in the United States gradually decreased. In its final model year, 2015, the Xterra sold 10,672 units overall, whereas the Jeep Wrangler, one of the most well-liked cars in this market, sold 202,702 units. Whoa, why? Nissan has stated that it won’t be producing a new Xterra, at least not anytime soon, despite widespread speculations to the contrary. A new Xterra would be a great addition to the market given how obsessed consumers are with 4x4s right now. It’s understandable that the automaker might not have the time or resources to pick up the Xterra mantle six years after the SUV was discontinued in 2015. This is because the automaker has a large new-model push that includes the new Frontier as well as the recently redesigned 2022 Pathfinder three-row SUV, updated Armada SUV, refreshed Kicks, all-new Rogue crossover, and a new Z sports car.

The Xterra is still envisioned as a four-door, two-row SUV. We believe a new Xterra would use a scaled-down version of the Frontier midsize pickup’s frame in order to maintain the original’s off-road prowess and credibility. Low-cost models might come standard with rear-wheel drive, but the majority would be built with four-wheel drive and available low-range gearing.

The 4.0-liter V-6 engine was the only option for the previous-generation Xterra when it went out of production, an outdated lump of an engine that was nevertheless used in the Frontier for many years. If the Xterra were to reappear today, it would take on the 2022 Frontier’s new 3.8-liter V-6 engine and nine-speed automated transmission with 310 horsepower.

We’ve outfitted our fictitious Xterra in the same Pro-4X styling as the 2022 Frontier because a Pro-4X ultimate-off-road trim would be a given. Nissan now has all it needs to reintroduce the SUV to service after the inside upgrades to the Frontier have been added. I beg you, traditionalists and admirers of real body-on-frame SUVs, to join me in observing a moment of silence. After 2015, the Nissan Xterra won’t be produced anymore, and there isn’t a replacement in the works.

Nissan states in a news statement outlining the company’s objectives for 2016:

“The current production cycle of the Nissan Xterra is over. The final Xterra will be sold in the fall of 2015 after more than 750,000 have been sold since its debut as a model year 2000 car.”

I mean, we all anticipated this. Real robust 4x4s are simply no longer valued as highly as they once were. (Except if it’s a Jeep.) Additionally, automakers stop selling when customers stop buying. The sales of the current-generation vehicle dropped from a high of 72,447 in 2005 to just 16,505 last year, according to Car & Driver.

So, yeah, I suppose I would fire this b*tch too if I were in charge of the business. Better that than ruining the reputation of the Xterra by hacking off its balls and renaming it a four-door minivan. Cough PATHFINDER Cough.

The Xterra wasn’t faultless, but I think off-road and adventure enthusiasts will remember it as a definite undervalued performer. One of the last brand-new cars with a sturdy body-on-frame construction, a lever-activated transfer case, a reliable mechanical emergency brake, and, oh yeah, a real manual transmission to go with a V6 was available. You go, 4Runner!

The Xterra never completely outgrew the “knock-off 90’s Land Rover” look, but it had interesting features and an interior that was reminiscent of the Honda Element and felt tough in all the right areas. Not to mention the SUV’s construction quality, which I always believed to be superior to the Jeep Wrangler.

Additionally, they were frequently much less expensive than their Jeep and Toyota counterparts, which continue to see explosive sales. If only Nissan had put up a little more effort to sell this vehicle, perhaps by including a few entertaining gimmicks (rapid release doors)? They could have used it for a lot more things, in my opinion.

Yes, the Xterra used a lot of fuel and moved with the heaviness of a full farm animal, but by golly, that’s how an SUV should move!

Anyway, it’s all over now, sweetheart; this fall will see the final Nissan Xterra constructed. The Titan pickup truck, which has undergone a major redesign, is still in production, as is its stale younger brother, the Frontier.
