At Mudfest, the Northwest Automotive Press Association’s annual track-and-offroad event, we had the opportunity to test a Frontier Pro-4X and a Tacoma TRD Pro. We also drove each vehicle around for a week to get a feel for how they are to live with. We discovered that these trucks, which on the surface appeared to be similar, are shockingly different.

Contrarily, the Nissan boasts a delightfully smooth nine-speed automatic transmission that is perfectly suited to this truck, albeit occasionally being reluctant to downshift as rapidly as the driver would want.
