This hands-on driving assistance feature seemed to operate reasonably well, but it needed more concentration than we would want. The Leaf can handle well if the road is straight. The Leaf, however, may begin to weave as it approaches a curving turn in an effort to maintain balance.
I couldn’t help but grasp the wheel and have the brakes ready to slow down when I was approaching an on-ramp or a section of the highway that connects to another. This would allow me to gently into the twisting turn.
To keep the driver’s attention on the road, the function also required hand contact every 30 seconds or so. Fortunately, I could rest my hands on the bottom of the driving wheel as opposed to always having them at nine and three.
I did, however, like what Nissan refers to as the Around View Monitor. This function employs cameras all around the car to provide a bird’s eye perspective of parking. That can be a big assistance in avoiding damaging the fender or running over any onlookers. It’s a great plus that it’s now standard equipment, and Nissan deserves praise for including it.
Although the Leaf does support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging is sadly not available.
The Leaf received a five star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, with frontal and side crashes obtaining four and five stars, respectively.
Even though I personally avoided a collision while driving the Nissan Leaf, I felt secure. The Leaf is little, but it does have a robust stance that makes it appear bigger than it is. Having more headroom also makes it easier for drivers of obnoxiously huge pickup trucks to view the Leaf.
