It is outrageous that I have to pay $490 in road tax just to operate the vehicle! I get about 25 miles per gallon from the Lexus, so every time I fill up, I have to pay a significant amount in fuel tax and VAT. The government’s policy on motor taxes is obscenely greedy.

History of the Lexus RX: first generation
Beginning in earnest in 1994, this new luxury crossover’s development, the final design was approved by the end of 1995. Early in 1997, prototype cars began going through testing. This was at the same time as the Sport Luxury Vehicle, or SLV, concept had its public debut at the Chicago Auto Show.
The production vehicle went on sale in Japan in December 1997 under the name Toyota Harrier, and from March 1998 onward it was available in export regions under the name Lexus RX 300. It quickly rose to the top of the Lexus model lineup, accounting for half of all sales.
As a result of its unitary structure, which was effectively an elevated and strengthened version of a modern saloon car chassis, the vehicle had a ground clearance of 185 mm, which was sufficient to handle practically any off-road situation that a suburban SUV may face. The RX’s exterior was designed to be stylish and passenger-oriented, in contrast to more functional off-road vehicles, and its cabin was roomy enough to allow walkthrough access between the front seats.
There were three different gasoline engine options, each of which was positioned transversely. The 3.0-liter 220hp V6 found in all markets could be ordered in either front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive forms, while the base unit for the domestic market was a 2.2-liter 140hp four-cylinder (front-wheel drive only).
