As confusing as it may sound, a light-colored granite that is a staggering a billion and a half years older than the sandstone sits on top of the sandstone.
The older rock should, in theory, be beneath the more recent sandstone, not on top of it, and, as far as I am aware, no one has ever been able to explain the granite sighting on the skull and the camel humps.
In any event, the walks are stunning, and it’s an excellent way to leave Phoenix.
Tonto Natural Bridge in Pine, Arizona
Tonto Natural Bridge, the second geological marvel on our journey, can be reached from Camelback Mountain in under two hours. The largest travertine bridge in the world, according to estimates, is this naturally occurring bridge.
