But before we go there, let’s speak about the IVT in detail because, holy sh*t, it was mind-blowing.
As you can see, CVTs are normally the bane of any automobile aficionado. It can convert any good car into a simple so-so one with its fake feel and rubber band-like sensation, and for certain people (yes, Subaru, we’re looking at you), it’s an instant turnoff. The engine is neutered half the time, and the other half, it’s like trying to stop a horny puppy from humping your real doesn’t know what “the term “medium ground”
Well, Kia appears to have discovered that miraculous “The Intelligent Variable Transmission, or IVT, is a midway ground. Although this approach isn’t very novel or anything, it’s amusing how few manufacturers could execute it so flawlessly.
Kia’s IVT combines a CVT’s lightness and simplicity, tosses in a chain-link-type belt, and sprinkles in an adaptive shift logic. In brief, it replicates a regular automatic transmission with none of the downsides (possible shift shock, etc). (potential shift shock, etc.).
In their internal studies, Kia says the IVT transmission is excellent for a 1.27 km/L jump in fuel economy (combined city and highway) compared to a regular 6-speed automatic. In fact, the Hyundai achieved a fuel economy rating of 12.82 km/L while the Kia achieved 13.5 km/L within the projected level of increase when comparing the Kona and the Seltos (basically mechanical twins).
The Seltos has unquestionably superior driving characteristics above just improved fuel efficiency. Especially in gunnit mode, it is more torque-y, confident, and responsive than the Kona. Additionally, it doesn’t have the annoying sliding, drone-like noise that the Honda HR-V frequently exhibits.
We believe that this modest upgrade will allow the Seltos to surpass its brother from a different mother, the Kona, in terms of mechanical polish. To obtain a more complete view of where this new sub-compact SUV sits, we can’t wait to give it a few more miles (perhaps on some winding roads tomorrow).
