The operation of Key Finder
There is no need to overstuff your life with gear. Instead, choose for fantastic technology that simplifies your daily tasks and lessens stress. Key finders can change the game for people who have trouble keeping track of both large and small items. How do these little wireless gadgets function? Here are the essentials you should be aware of before making a purchase.
Bluetooth vs. Radio Signal
Key finders operate by sending and receiving an undetectable signal. Either Bluetooth or radio frequency (RF) waves are used as signals. Bluetooth is a wireless technology that enables communication between devices across close ranges (up to about 30 feet). Items nearby can be quickly located by Bluetooth-connecting a key finder to your smartphone. At ranges of 100 feet or more, your phone’s Wi-Fi network comes into play and allows you to track missing items using an app over greater distances (beyond 30 feet).
Radio waves, which are used in RF technology, have a greater range than Bluetooth but not as much as your Wi-Fi network. Your smartphone cannot be associated with an RF key finder. Instead, they include a transmitter that resembles a remote control. The little receivers that are fastened to your equipment are tracked by this central transmitter. On the one hand, using RF finders is simple. No Bluetooth technology, smart smartphone, or app are required. Simply press a button to set off the alarm. However, RF-based key finders are only effective out to a distance of roughly 115 feet. They are therefore ideal for usage at home. However, Bluetooth-enabled key finders are definitely more practical if you commute or travel frequently.
Size and Sound
Key finders must be small enough to be attached to a keychain without being too small for them to be lost themselves. The tracking receivers that are attached to keys and other objects are typically between one and two inches long, one and two inches wide, and only a fraction of an inch thick. When you push a button on the remote transmitter or use the software on your smartphone, their internal electronics contain ringers that sound. Look for loudness levels between 80 and 85 decibels for people who are hard of hearing or who just want the peace of mind that comes with a really loud alarm. And watch out! Avoid using one of these devices close to someone’s head since the sounds they produce can hurt their ears or even harm them.
Additional Features
Key finders can be basic or customized with a number of additional features. Some key finders include one or more of the following capabilities in addition to a loud alarm:
- One of the perks of purchasing a Bluetooth key finder is seamless app integration. But the quality and usability of the apps themselves differ tremendously. Pay attention to client feedback supplied in the form of ratings and reviews. Since the trackers from the Tile brand have undergone numerous upgrades over the years, their software is among the most sophisticated and user-friendly, and it works with both Apple and Android smartphones.
- All key finders, whether they employ Bluetooth or RF technology, are affected by battery life. Some manufacturers offer extra batteries, which might help you keep your finder running.
- You may find items at night, in shadowy nooks, or hidden between cushions with the aid of an integrated LED spotlight. An LED light (in the transmitter itself) is frequently included in RF key trackers that are controlled by remote transmitters for just this reason. After pressing the alert button, utilize the transmitter’s flashlight to look for your keys and other lost objects.
- You can capture images from a distance while using a selfie button. Some key finders can be connected to the camera on your phone.
Can a key fob be turned off?
Yes, your key fob can be removed from the system if you lose it. If the key fob is picked up by someone else, this will stop it from being used. Make sure to carefully follow the instructions because different security systems will have a different procedure for erasing the key fob.
You should take your security system into account while deleting your key fob. For instance, deleting a key fob from a touchscreen panel will differ from deleting a key fob from an alphanumeric keypad-based hardwired system. For key fob programming, some panels will have a separate area, while others will only let you change the settings through zone programming.
Through *56 programming, you can remove a key fob from a Honeywell VISTA panel. Start by typing the Installer Code + [8] + [00] to enter programming mode. The installed code by default is 4112. The “Installer Code 20” message ought to appear. You have a fixed keypad if the display only shows a 20 and nothing else. When you have a 6160 keypad or another comparable keypad, come back to this point and press [*99] to end programming. Press [*56] to start zone programming after that. Then press the [*] key twice, followed by the two-digit zone number, on the key fob’s first button. Enter [00] to set the Zone Type (ZT) to “Not Used” and turn off the zone once it has been shown. To confirm, press the [*] key. Then you will be asked to “Delete Zone?” For “Yes,” press [1]. For each button zone that was configured on the key fob, repeat this procedure. Press [00] to end zone programming once the last button zone has been erased and you’ve been taken back to the “Enter Zone Number” screen. Press [*99] to end programming, then.
A VISTA-15P has reserved key fob zones that are 49 through 56 in number, whereas a VISTA-20P and a VISTA-21iP have reserved key fob zones that are 49 through 64. Any zone that is higher than zone 8 can, however, be utilized for a key fob. This is why it’s crucial to always note the zone connected to your wifi devices so you can quickly access them in the future.

By doing this, the fob will be unpaired from the system and can then be used on another system. Delete the SiXFOB from the programming if it has been lost. Pressing any button will finish the deletion procedure if the keyfob is discovered and used on your machine, even if it happens long later.
