Make trucks Hyundai or Kia?

Contrary to popular belief, the new Hyundai Santa Cruz is a pickup truck. Although it lacks a full-size tow rig due to its smaller dimensions and unibody construction, we still think highly enough of it to include it on our list of Editors’ Choices. Instead, consider the first Hyundai pickup as an alternative to the similarly-unibody Honda Ridgeline, which also has a crew cab, short-bed body design that is suitable for everyone. With its intriguing visage and wrinkled sheetmetal, the Santa Cruz stands out more than the Hondaor any other mid-size vehicle, for that matter. Although its interior is more stylish than that of its competitors, some models disappoint due to the absence of physical controls. Its four-cylinder base engine is similarly unattractive, but the more potent turbo option is an expensive option. The 2022 Santa Cruz, however, is a more practical variation on the worn-out crossover formula, and thanks to the open box on its butt, it is also a pickup truck.

When will Kia release a truck?

There is currently no information available, but it will be intriguing to see whether the Hyundai brand (both are a member of the Hyundai Motor Group) also releases an electric pickup truck.

Kia may choose to manufacture its all-electric pickup trucks in the US whenever they are ready to be released. The presentation on the expansion of EV manufacturing contains a hint regarding that.

The South Korean automaker announced that beginning in 2024, American factories will start making electrified versions of mid-sized SUVs and pickup trucks:

“For instance, starting in 2025, small and medium-sized EVs will be manufactured in Europe. Mid-sized SUVs and pickup trucks are popular in the United States, and starting in 2024, electric versions of these vehicles will be made here. In China, Kia expects to release mid-size EV cars starting in 2019, while India plans to start making entry- and mid-size EV models in 2025.”

If electric pickup trucks are anticipated in 2026, the 2024 deadline must apply to new mid-sized SUVs.

Rivian (R1T) and GMC have already introduced the first contemporary all-electric pickups (Hummer EV Pickup). Ford will start giving the F-150 Lightning to customers this Spring, and several other companies have indicated intentions to do the same (including Tesla, Chevrolet and Toyota).

The year was significant for Ford launch events. Ford finally permitted me to drive the Bronco this year after years of waiting. And although I wasn’t behind the wheel, I was able to take a spin in the brand-new all-electric F-150 Lightning before President Biden did. But for me, a dedicated auto nerd, the new Maverick small pickup may be Ford’s most anticipated 2021 car launch.

Although the Ford Maverick isn’t the most eye-catching model in the range, it’s a revolutionary new little truck that could change the definition of what a truck is. It’s the first new affordable, useful, and entertaining people’s car to appear in a very long time. And if that weren’t enough, the Maverick base model is currently the least expensive electrified car for sale in the US.

The Maverick resembles the Ford F-150 in appearance. It offers a compelling use case for almost everyone, much like its larger brother.

In theory, the Maverick is exceptional. However, Ford recently invited me to Nashville for a few days so I could test it out in action, and the Maverick is incredibly sturdy in practically every way. I won’t say that the Maverick is all you’ve ever imaginedyou can dream a little bigger than a reasonably priced Fordbut it might be the relatively little vehicle you didn’t realize you needed.

Compact pickup truck with four doors is called the Maverick. Ford’s unibody C2 platform, which also supports the Bronco Sport and Escape crossovers, is adapted for use in this vehicle. The Maverick blurs the boundary between a crossover and a truck, so Ford could have gone either way with the marketing, but the company has embraced it as a member of the “Built Ford Tough truck family.”

Depending on your frame of reference The Maverick is actually smaller than the Ford Ranger. Compact refers to a truck that is smaller than a medium truck. The Maverick is 11.1 inches shorter when viewed in length. Its bed is 5.6 inches shorter than even a short-box Ranger, and it is 4.6 inches shorter in height and 5.2 inches slimmer than the Ranger overall.

The Maverick is similar to the old third-generation Ranger then, you might be wondering. I guess not quite. In person, it appears to be about a foot longer than prior midsize trucks because of the crew cab. Additionally, the Maverick would hardly be regarded as little from a crossover perspective. It is about an inch longer and has a two-inch larger wheelbase than Ford’s three-row midsize Explorer.

Very nicely. What automobile manufacturers allow and disallow journalists to do with a vehicle during a vehicle introduction can reveal a lot about a vehicle’s performance. Ford was certain. They let us to drive every Maverick and provided us with plenty of free time to do so. After that, there won’t be anything to gripe about.

Depending on the specification, the Maverick weighs an extremely low 3,5633,731 lbs for a truck. That is about 900 pounds less than a Honda Ridgeline and almost on level with the Bronco Sport. In addition, the wheelbase is 16 inches longer than the Bronco Sport at 121.1 inches.

As a result, thanks to the long wheelbase, you get a vehicle that is both lightweight and agile as well as quite stable. Ford adjusted the suspension and steering to a comfortable Goldilocks setting. You don’t get Porsche-level road input, but you wouldn’t expect (or even necessarily want) that from a truck, would you?

Both Maverick engines have their advantages, but when forced beyond of their comfort zones, they can appear coarse. The hybrid can continue droning. but it provides enough power. When it was moving uphill from a stop with a full pallet of mulch in the bed, that was the only time it labored even slightly. The Bronco Sport Badlands, which uses the same engine as the 2.0-liter EcoBoost, drives quite similarly to that vehicle. It has a lot of oomph and is comfortable for daily drive. However, slamming the lengthy throttle can make the power delivery feel sluggish and erratic. In the end, choosing an engine will be more about efficiency or all-wheel drive than it will be about power.

Indeed, and perhaps even better. My first hybrid sting involved a spirited dash through the picturesque Natchez Trace Parkway, which is winding and well-paved. I switched to Sport mode, got an average of 38 mpg, and so on. The Maverick then achieved 36.5 mpg on my second trip, which was used to evaluate the cargo capacity using the pallet of mulch stated earlier. I drove slowly on my last trip, keeping the Maverick on regular mode. Things started to get a little too lax when I took a wrong turn during a crucial phone call with my wife and ended up on a 30-minute detour on Google Maps. Thankfully, I had averaged 42.5 mpg when I returned to base in time to catch my airport shuttle.

I refrained from going into full-on eco-warrior mode to get the most mileage. However, the Ford representatives told tales of others who did that on trips that got close to 60 mpg.

The trail that made up our off-road course wound across a pasture. There was one light ascent over a few humps and logs. The Maverick handled everything deftly, if not enthusiastically. For most owners’ intended use of a Mavericktaking kayaks to the lake or something similara Maverick will be more than adequate.

However, I’d wager that in the near future, we’ll see anything resembling the alleged Maverick Timberline trim. In the Bronco Sport Badlands, Ford’s 2.0-liter engine is used since it has enough power on hand to handle more demanding tasks. Even though Ford doesn’t formally endorse the technique, owners will be eager to elevate the Maverick and stiffen the suspension.

Ford performed a great job staying inside its financial constraints. Ford’s interior design manager Scott Anderson stated that the Maverick’s interior is “plastic.” We’re pleased with it. And with that introduction, it looks fantastic. The aesthetic is simple and uncluttered. Color and texture are used on the plastic surfaces to make them feel appealing and more expensive.

The interior is not only beautiful but also useful for those who will utilize it. While not the most costly touchscreen offered by Ford, the base 8-inch model is clear and has an ergonomic layout for the controls. Ford included cool youth-friendly features like center console touchdown spots for numerous phones or doors that can clip in extra-large water bottles. Ford wanted to underscore that, so he sent us home with enormous S’well 40 ounce bottles.

The back seat space would be my only worry as a father with two children in car seats. The back doors of the Maverick are bigger than the entrance. There was enough space back there for me to sit behind myself without difficulty, but there isn’t a lot of area for a rear-facing car seat to be installed horizontally. On the car seat fit report card, I have a feeling the Maverick won’t score all A’s.

Oh, yes. The Maverick has a maximum payload of 1,500 lbs, which puts it on par with midsize trucks despite having a unibody design like sedans and the majority of crossovers. Both engines have a 2,000-pound towing capacity as standard, but the EcoBoost engine’s towing capacity can be increased to 4,000 pounds with the 4K Tow Package.

In essence, you can load whatever you can fit into the Maverick’s tiny bed, and it has enough towing power to pull a small boat or a well-equipped camper trailer. Additionally, the Maverick not only manages those loads but also maintains a reasonable driving standard.

Ford obviously intends to sell Maverick accessories, but they also identified “doers and manufacturers” as the Maverick’s target market. Additionally, they will have the ability to construct their own storage solutions both within and outside the Maverick.

Ford includes the Ford Integrated Tether System within the Maverick (FITS). Eight matching mounts are present, one behind the center console and the other seven underneath the back bench seat. Ford offers a $50 FITS accessory kit that includes under-seat storage dividers, a trash can, a cord organizer, cupholders, and hooks for grocery bags. To enable customers to 3D-print their own accessories, they are also planning on providing the CAD for the slot design online.

The Maverick has a flexible Flexbed on the outside. For personalized gear storage, you receive a variety of cleats, pockets, and tie-down points. Ford is developing an online DIY community in addition to its own products that will provide owners with how-to tutorials on building storage themselves and is accessible via a QR code in the bed.

Additionally, the bed has two 12-volt power plugs on either side for makers and doers. Additionally, the tailgate has numerous configurations, a weight capacity of 400 pounds, and, naturally, cleats that serve as soda bottle openers.

Ford charged between $20,000 and $40,000 for the Maverick. The truck technically starts at $19,995 MSRP, which is slightly more than $21,000 when destination charges are added. The prices of the two vehicles are similar. The Maverick offers a combustion engine with +92 horsepower and +93 lb-ft of torque or a hybrid powertrain that achieves 10-plus more mpg in the city. The Maverick is more capable off-road than the Taos. It can tow. Compared to the Taos with the truck bed, it is more useful. Driving is more enjoyable. And the interior, in my opinion, is prettier.

We can argue over how really Built Ford Tough the Maverick-based crossover is. The Maverick, whichever you want to refer to it, won’t be easy to outperform in terms of value.
