Who Makes Infiniti I30?

The Nissan Technical Center in Atsugi, Japan, created the 2000 I30. The INFINITI I30’s outstanding V6 engine performance has been praised since since it was first released. Five years running, Ward’s Auto World has rated its unique 3.0-liter engine one of the “10 Best Engines.”

MPG

The mid-size I30 was based on the Nissan Maxima, just as Infiniti’s entry-level G20 was based on the compact Nissan Sentra. The I30 competed against the Lexus ES 300, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Oldsmobile Aurora because it cost about $10,000 more than the similar Maxima, model for model. Compared to Nissan’s 3-year/36,000-mile guarantee, Infiniti’s 4-year/60,000-mile warranty is substantially longer. The I30 had a more attractive front bumper cover, nicer alloy wheels, and a glossy grille that was identical to the one used on the Q45. The rest was largely the same, including the tires.

Bigger, bolder, and generally better

The revamped I30 from Infiniti is a completely new vehicle for the new millennium. The I30 has undergone a substantial redesign that modernizes the vehicle’s appearance, feel, and essential features for the first time since it debuted as an Infiniti model in ’96.

The I30 competes against the Lexus ES 300, Acura 3.2TL, Cadillac Catera, and a number of other $30K-plus vehicles as the middle machine in Infiniti’s three-model sedan portfolio. It engages in combat with more opulent features than ever to set itself apart from its rivals (and the differently styled but mechanically related Nissan Maxima). The new I30 is more than just a tarted-up, updated version of the previous model; instead, it represents significant upgrades, such as a notable 2.0-inch wheelbase extension that significantly increases interior legroom. The increase in overall interior volume that resulted from that stretch is likewise primarily to be welcomed.

The passenger compartment seems more spacious and comfortable thanks to attractive new interior highlights, while cutting-edge stylistic elements like matte surface finishes and slick chrome nibbles keep the richness factor high. The use of fake wood for cost-cutting purposes in the inside is the only minor letdown. No trees were destroyed in the construction of the I30. Even a few surprise features for this price range can be found if you choose the premium I30t (like our test car). The most prominent feature is a Mercedes-Benz-style electric pop-up sunshade for the back window. Cool.

As before, the advanced 3.0-liter DOHC V-6 engine and four-speed automatic transmission are shared by the base model and the more upmarket t-version. Wide-ranging engine modifications have resulted in a significant increase in output of 37 horsepower and 12 pound-feet, yet without compromising the I30’s trademark tranquility and smoothness.

The I30 now leads the class in terms of horsepower output, but something always seems to get lost between the specs and the stopwatch. The 225-horsepower Acura 3.2TL outperforms the Infiniti by a full second in the sprint to 60 mph (8.4 seconds), and it loses ground in the quarter mile (15.7 seconds for the Acura as compared to 16.4 seconds for the Infiniti). It’s interesting to note that the new I30 is far slower than the one it replaces, which could reach 60 mph in 7.0 seconds and complete a quarter mile in 15.5 seconds.

The front-drive I30 handles admirably, stopping from 60 mph in 125 feet, slicing through the slalom at 64.7 mph (be aware of the rear end’s tendency to swerve when pushed to the limit), and tearing across the skidpad at an exceptionally high 0.82 lateral g. The I30 emanates control, competence, and luxury when the driver is in the driver’s seat, with an excellent blend of smooth ride and precise handling. The Infiniti’s numerous dynamic qualities, comfort, and new, more inspired sheetmetal make it clear that the I30 (and the t-model) is ready to strongly reassert itself in the entry-level luxury class, despite power that doesn’t quite make it to the seat of your pants.
