2011 Infiniti G37 IPL Coupe against
One thing is obvious after spending a pleasant long weekend with the 2011 Infiniti G37 IPL Coupe: it’s made to be appreciated on the open road. Similar to BMW’s M line and Mercedes’ AMG, Infiniti Performance Line (IPL) is the automaker’s in-house tuning division. According to the manufacturer, the G37 Coupe is the first vehicle in the Infiniti portfolio to receive the IPL treatment, but it won’t be the last.

The Infiniti Performance Line shows up just when you thought Infiniti couldn’t possibly squeeze any more power out of its G37 Coupe (IPL). The 2011 Infiniti IPL G37 Coupe has a recognizable look, so at first glance you might not notice the understated yet confident style that gives this svelte automobile a stronger, more aggressive posture. And that would be unfortunate because this powerful Coupe can stand confidently due to an increase in power and performance.
If the new IPL emblem confuses you, just picture the Mercedes AMG line or the BMW M series. Although its performance modifications are not quite as severe, Infiniti’s IPL G37 Coupe still offers observable improvements without the significant price increases that go along with the aforementioned auto lines.
With engine upgrades and an upgraded exhaust system, Infiniti was able to increase the 3.7-liter V-6 engine’s output by 18 horsepower and 6 pounds of torque, for a total of 348 horsepower and 276 pound-feet of torque. This rear-wheel-drive beauty has stronger front and rear suspension, sportier steering, and a smoother ride in addition to more athletic handling.
The extra horsepower is only a pedal press away, but the IPL G37 doesn’t forgo fuel efficiency. It still manages to get 11 L/100 km in the city and 7.4 L/100 km on the highway, which is fairly good, especially for a sports car. This is for a vehicle that thrives on performance and power.
Inside, the red leather seats and steering wheel are accented with beautiful red stitching, while the footrest, pedals, and metal trim provide a touch of masculinity. The standard G37 comes with all the bells and whistles you’ve come to expect, including push-button ignition, automatic temperature control, touch screen navigation, and a Bose sound system with 11 speakers, to mention a few. Although there are just two available paint colors for the IPL G37, Graphite Shadow and Malbec Black, it comes equipped with 19-inch split 7-spoke wheels covered in Bridgestone performance rubber.
Although Infiniti intends to expand its lineup with a convertible IPL G Coupe in the spring of 2012, if a hard top is what gets your heart racing, go no further than the IPL G37.
2013 until the present, INFINITI Q60 IPL
In terms of performance, it wasn’t really a rival to other premium brands. However, the Infiniti took a stride forward in that market.
The IPL, which stands for Infiniti Performance Line, was not even close to the BMW M or the AMG league. It was more akin to the S-Line trim level for the Audi. It also had no desire to get there. But in terms of performance and luxury, it was superior to a standard G37.
With the lower side splitter expanded and side-scoops housing the foglights, the front bumper appeared more aggressive from the outside. Larger wheels and aerodynamic side-sills were added to enhance the sporty appearance. But in the end, it was still the same Infiniti G37 as before, although with a new trim level and badge.
The center infotainment system was as usual mounted on top of the dashboard inside. However, the Q60 IPL had a brand-new inside, unlike the G37. The Bose sound system was a nice touch that improved any travel.
Under the hood, several adjustments were done, and the 3.7-liter engine’s output was increased by 18 horsepower by Infiniti experts. A 7-speed dual-clutch transmission was an option in addition to the 6-speed manual transmission that was the norm.
2011 Infiniti IPL G Coupe under test
First attempt at an internal tuner by Infiniti. IPL, the company’s new performance subbrand, stands for Infiniti Performance Line. The IPL varies from the reliable Gs in that it has a more aggressive body kit, 19-inch Y-spoke wheels, and most importantly, a 3.7-liter V-6 that produces 348 horsepower and 276 lb-ft of torque—increases of 18 and 6 respectively, so not quite the overhaul required to create a M or AMG sled.
As long as it’s black or gray, you may order an IPL in whatever color you like. The black leather seats and steering wheel of the gray IPL that we were driving had contrasting purple stitching. The inside is similar to a two-door G37 Sport, other from that.
With a 0-to-60 mph time of 5.4 seconds, the IPL actually comes in 0.1 seconds slower than the greatest time we’ve seen from a G37S coupe, despite having 18 more horsepower. Both clock identical 13.9-second quarter-mile performances, with the IPL just marginally faster up to 90 mph and then in every subsequent 10-mph increase. At 130 mph, it had a 0.7 second advantage.
The height of the driver has a significant impact on their comfort; those over six feet will find their heads kissing the headliner. However, drivers who are physically fit will value the adjustable thigh and torso bolsters that keep them firmly planted in corners. Although it might use more reach, a motorized tilting and telescoping steering wheel also contributes to comfort. Pedal control was compromised when the seat was moved closer to the wheel. Although operating the three pedals on the IPL is not very difficult with two feet, we were startled to see that Nissan’s clever SynchroRev Match downshift software, which elevates novices using their heels and toes, is not available for the IPL. The Michelin Laurens proving ground’s right-turn-heavy course also caused the IPL’s V-6 to splutter from fuel shortages with the tank only 30% full.
Comparing this Infiniti to the M or AMG group is not appropriate. Compared to even a BMW 335i coupe or an Audi S5, it is a little coarse. The Infiniti’s transmission demands more work than the 335i or S5’s, and the VQ-series engine isn’t as smooth as a Bimmer’s. The IPL, though, has steering that is as rapid, smooth, and responsive to both. Combining that with strong grip (0.93 g) and a taut chassis, the IPL transforms into a fantastic two-up long-distance GT car that prefers to take the less-traveled paths.
The IPL has eight-way power front seats, six airbags, navigation, XM radio, and a sunroof and has a starting price of $48,825. Color and transmission are the only checkboxes that need to be selected. (The $1900 seven-speed car costs.) The IPL’s starting price is exactly in the middle of the $44,975 and $51,975 335i and 335is coupes. Yes, the BMWs are faster, but to come close to having like-for-like content, consumers need to spend an additional $3450 ($2100 for navigation, $500 for heated seats, $500 for keyless start, and $350 for satellite radio). Despite the fact that competing vehicles offer all of the IPL’s content and that the IPL isn’t all that enticing compared to a G37S, the IPL succeeds on value.
What Has Happened to Them? : Infiniti IPL G
It’s good when a corporation attempts something new, like Hyundai’s new N-Line, that’s a letter we haven’t seen before, in a world full of RS this and Turbo that, and the assortment of varied letters that follow automobiles. With the IPL, or Infiniti Performance Line, vehicles, Infiniti also attempted it for a period. Given that both of these vehicles weren’t selling all that well to begin with, it was an intriguing decision to make the IPL package available on both the G37 Coupe and Convertible.
So what was included in the IPL package? First, a VQ37VHR model producing 348 horsepower and 276 lb-ft of torque. Nissan’s VVEL (Variable Valve Timing) system is used in this engine, raising the redline to 7400 RPM. There was also a minor body package, modified exhaust with bigger tips, stronger suspension, and 19-inch wheels. For $9,000 more than the coupe and convertible G37 Sport versions, all of this is included. The coupe started at $51,200, and the convertible at $61,450.
I’d say that’s worth it, but spending almost $60,000 on an Infiniti might not be the best decision. Sure, the VQ engine family is practically indestructible, but for the same amount of money, you could have purchased a C63 AMG with a fire-breathing, earth-shattering 6.2L V8. For the same money, a 6.2L V8 Cadillac CTS-V with 556 horsepower was also an option. So, in terms of horsepower, was the IPL a realistic option? No.
maybe based on performance? The coupe has a zero to sixty time of five seconds flat, which is not bad. The sprint was completed in 4.3 seconds by the C63 AMG and 3.9 seconds by the Cadillac. For the same price, it was therefore far slower than its rivals.
However, it would have been wonderful to see the IPL emblem remain because, in my opinion, they had something going there. The IPL is only no longer in existence in name thanks to Infiniti’s Red Sport portfolio.
Personally, I believe the convertible is stunning, especially in this white and red color scheme. The cherry on top is that they are asking a fair price. Of course, reasonable means between $20,000 and $25,000, but hey, it’s special. Because there aren’t many of these on the road, you’ll stand out much more than if you go with a normal German hardtop. Though a Cadillac XLR is also available for $20,000, so make a sensible decision.
