When I previously resided in an apartment building, the garage door transmitter was giving me trouble. It was a Genie garage door opener, and when trying to program the Homelink on my 2015 Audi Allroad, both garage transmitters that came with the apartment failed at the exact same step.
I had to purchase new transmitters that could connect to the Allroad’s Homelink. I’m not sure why the newer “Genie” transmitters were able to interact with the Allroad right away, while the older ones required learning.
As an alternative, I came across this comment on the internet:

Do this: When the Homelink button on your car starts to gently flash, give it around 15 seconds of pressure. Holding the remote near the Homelink button while it is still pressed in the car, press the (remote) button until the Homelink button begins to flash rapidly.
Once you’ve pressed and released the “learn” button on the opener, return to the car and push the Homelink button twice or three times within 30 seconds.
In the event that that doesn’t work, press the learn button before pressing and holding the Homelink button until the opener’s lights begin to blink.

Is the Learn button present on every garage door opener?
Rolling code technology and a learn button on the garage door opener motor are used by the majority of typical garage door remote controls nowadays. The learn button enables you to reset the device and delete the code so that your car’s buttons and remotes will open the door. Because the code on the transmitter varies every time you use it, rolling codes offer security. When you need to open your door again, the system transmits a fresh code to your receiver.
DIP switches connected to the circuit board of older garage door openers, or those created before 1993, are used to connect the remote control to the opener. The transmitter and receiver of each unit contain 8 to 12 tiny switches that are each programmed with a different code. The remote unlocks the garage door after synchronization. The system was developed to fill the security gap left by the first generation of electric garage door openers, which could have opened both your garage door and the garage doors of many of your neighbors with a single signal.
With up to 1 million possible codes, rolling code technology offers greater security, although a garage door opener with 12 DIP switches does allow for more than 4,000 variations. The code sent by a transmitter can, unfortunately, be read by basic radio scanners. The DIP switches must be changed if a new owner is using this outdated technology.

You may move a few little switches around to create any passcode you like. It should be comparable to the password on your phone. You won’t replace it unless you decide it’s no longer secure, at which point it will stay the same.
Note: If you have an earlier HomeLink garage door opener, there are no instructions for configuring it without a remote. In the HomeLink system, a code cannot be manually set. You need to utilize a remote to program it.
Most of the steps are the same. Make sure the door is shut, the key is not in the ignition, and any outdated programming is cleared away.
- Simply push both the remote button and the HomeLink button you wish to program while holding the remote up to the HomeLink button.
- Hold them until you notice the in-car remote’s LED starting to flash quickly.
