The first-generation Titan and the first-generation QX56 (model code JA60) both share the F-Alpha platform and are based on the first-generation Armada. It is the first Infiniti manufactured in the country. Only the US, Canada, Russia, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, UAE, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia offered the QX56 for sale. Early in 2000, work on the JA60 QX56 and the WA60 Armada began. As part of a Nissan design tradition that dates back to the 1985 launching of the D21 Pathfinder, the rear door handles were mounted on the C-pillar to give the vehicle the appearance of a two-door truck with a camper shell while keeping the front doors’ standard door handles.
A 5.6-liter VK56DEV8 engine with 320 horsepower (239 kW) at 4,900 rpm and 393 lb-ft (533 Nm) of torque at 3,600 rpm and a 5-speed automated transmission with an overdrive drove the first-generation QX56. The engine had cast iron cylinder liners, as is typical with aluminum blocks. Four valves were used in each cylinder of the DOHC valvetrain. When the driver chooses all-wheel drive, the throttle becomes less sensitive, apparently to make it simpler to control acceleration when driving off-road. Infiniti developed the throttle responsiveness of the QX56 to correlate to certain drivetrain modes.
The QX56 had a towing capacity of about 9,000 lb (4,082 kg). The mileage is 12 miles per US gallon (20 L/100 km; 14 mpg-imp) while operating at maximum efficiency. Only essential options, such as a DVD entertainment system, 4WD/2WD, and a bench in place of captain seats for the second row, are available in its single trim level. A 10-speaker Bose audio system, a DVD-based navigation system, leather upholstery for all seats, dual climate control, 18-inch chrome alloy wheels, and an adaptive cruise control system were also included as standard features. Another distinctive feature on the market was a Precrash system.
The QX56 was the most expensive Infiniti sold in North America since the Q45’s discontinuation (which was priced higher than the QX56) in 2006 and was Infiniti’s only full-size vehicle.
The Infiniti QX56 underwent a small facelift in early 2007 for the 2008 model year that added a new grille, a remodeled interior, a new intelligent key system, more standard features, and standard 20-inch chrome wheels. The updated model, which was unveiled in January 2007 at the North American International Auto Show, went on sale in April 2007.
The QX56 and Armada no longer share the same body after the 2010 model year because the second-generation QX56 shifted to the Y62 Patrol’s body while the first-generation Armada was still manufactured in the US until the 2015 model year.
