I navigate the carryover Infiniti InTouch infotainment system, which has a responsive 7-inch touchscreen below and an 8-inch screen at the top of the center console, as I start along the driving path. No big issues with the 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine that continues to churn away under the hood and delivers 400 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque to my right foot. With the seven-speed automatic transmission’s seamless cog changes, getting onto the expressway to travel south is simple. Although using the steering wheel paddles to manually change ratios is an option, the computer did all the work for me for the majority of the day due to sluggish shift orders.

Considering the output, the engine and gearbox combination is also reasonably efficient. It achieves 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.

My only issue with the drivetrain is that the blown V6’s exhaust tone is subdued. Even with the throttle wide open, the audible belch doesn’t make one feel anything. The driver safety technology in rival vehicles like the Genesis G70 and Lexus IS is significantly more generous. However, it doesn’t mean you can’t get the Q50 with all the contemporary bells and whistles. Blind-spot monitoring, a 360-degree camera, front and rear parking sensors, backup collision prevention, and rain-sensing wipers are included in my $58,435 (plus $995 for destination) model.

However, the Q50’s interior offers some consolation. The interior has endured the years despite being an older style. I believe the dual-arch dash and waterfall center stack add to a design that will still look good in 25 years. For the base model, the cabin plastics appear good, but for the Red Sport spec, they could be a little better. However, the test car I drove had quilted leather accents that helped raise cabin quality to match the higher-spec price. The quality of the seat comfort is also excellent.

Is Android Auto available on the 2014 Infiniti Q50?
