Your car’s radio is made smarter by Gracenote.
Gracenote demonstrates how it maintains radio relevant in cars using GPS, its music fingerprint technology, and a large database of stations.
Although it may appear as though broadcast radio is a thing of the past in the age of streaming audio services, music tagging company Gracenote reports that 80% of drivers still listen to FM. At CES 2017, Gracenote demonstrated how it could enhance the listening experience using GPS, its proprietary audio fingerprinting technology, and its database of radio stations.
For many years, Gracenote compiled a massive database of music, creating what it refers to as a “fingerprint” for each song. This fingerprint is used by Gracenote to recognize a song in any audio stream. For its radio demo, the system was able to recognize the song being played from any radio station while also providing details like the artist, album, and genre. The Gracenote system operates independently of HD radio or any other data transmission that streams audio data.
As soon as the system recognizes the driver’s fingerprint, which can take just a few seconds in a car, the radio display will display the song information.
Gracenote expanded on this feature by creating a database of radio stations that included GPS data on the signal towers and broadcasting range of each station. With the help of this information, a car may determine which radio stations it is capable of receiving and display that information to the driver rather than making them manually search through frequencies.
Each radio station’s genre is listed in the Gracenote database, which may also intelligently match genres across geographic boundaries. Thus, the car’s radio might automatically discover a station with a similar genre in the vehicle’s present location when a driver exits the signal range of one station.
Although Gracenote declined to say which automaker might be the first to employ this technology in a production model, the business has a long history of collaborating with auto parts manufacturers.

Beginning as an open-source effort in 1993, Gracenote involved the CD player program xmcd and a related database called CDDB. Ti Kan and Steve Scherf are the authors of xmcd and CDDB. Kan and Scherf developed a technique that uses the TOC data recorded at the start of each disc to identify and look up CDs because CDs lack any digitally-encoded information about their contents. The start offsets for each track on a CD are listed in a TOC, or table of contents. Its first database was built by volunteer user contributions, and this practice is still going on today. This resulted in a license dispute when Gracenote started to be sold commercially.

Gracenote has CarPlay, right?
Due to Apple CarPlay’s lack of radio compatibility, digital media indexer Gracenote developed a workaround that was on exhibit at CES 2018.
On the LCD of your car’s dashboard, Apple CarPlay displays apps, podcasts, and navigation, but it doesn’t support radio. The company that develops tags for digital music, Gracenote, demonstrated a fix for CarPlay’s radio issue at CES.
Gracenote demonstrated how it provides drivers with a robust radio experience combined with CarPlay through a demonstration app.
The software offers users more options than just playing local radio, including browsing stations based on geography or genre and selecting from a list of favorited stations. Even better, it blends broadcast and streaming stations smoothly so that drivers may get their local favorites while on the road.
Apple CarPlay does not work with AM/FM radios in vehicles due to its Internet-centric design and constrained amount of apps. However, there is still a sizable following for radio in automobiles. When using Apple CarPlay for communications and navigation, drivers must alternate between the CarPlay interface and the native interface of their vehicle to adjust the radio.
Gracenote has indexed and tagged radio stations all around the country using genre and geographical tags in addition to indexing and categorizing digital music. The app’s interface uses that database to provide drivers with a variety of capabilities to browse stations or simply find their favorites.
The Gracenote software isn’t available on the iTunes store, though. The business exclusively offers its technology to partners, never directly to customers. In order to include the solution into an app and make it compatible with Apple CarPlay, a carmaker will probably be required.
