The South Korean automakers Kia and Hyundai don’t appear to be the kind to give up on things too soon. The Hyundai Kia Automotive Group has successfully entered just about every vehicle market imaginable, from subcompact (Hyundai Accent) to full-size SUV, changing its reputation from a cheap, economic car builder to a competitive carmaker (Kia Borrego). Minivans appear to be one market that one of the biggest automakers in the world is unwilling to commit to. Hyundai recently stated that it would stop making the Entourage minivan after the 2009 model year. The Hyundai Entourage was originally introduced in 2007 and is merely a rebadged version of the Kia Sedona (which will continue to be produced).
The Hyundai Entourage suffered from dismal sales during its brief existence, selling 25,000 less units in its first two years than the Kia model did by itself last year. This is similar to the minivan platforms of General Motors and Ford Motor Company (27,000). By replacing its minivan with a new crossover vehicle, most likely based on the 2009 Hyundai Nuvis Concept that made its debut at the 2009 New York International Auto Show, Hyundai will likely adopt the same strategy as GM and Ford. While Ford Freestar was replaced by the retro-boxy 2009 Ford Flex, GM’s minivan lineup was replaced by the Lambda crossovers (Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia, Buick Enclave, and Saturn Outlook). Despite having three crossovers previously, including the elegant and opulent midsize Hyundai Veracruz, Hyundai does not have a full-size crossover to rival the anti-minivan Flex or Traverse.
A future Hyundai crossover may be designed after the stylish 2009 Hyundai Nuvis Concept. The huge, gullwing doors and flamboyant interior won’t be produced, but features like the high beltline and swept roofline that appear to be inspired by the Mazda MAZDA3 might. The Nuvis Concept not only displays future Hyundai car designs but also future Hyundai powertrain technologies. Hyundai calls its parallel hybrid drive system Hyundai Blue Drive, and it is used in the Nuvis Concept, a hybrid electric car. This technology connects a 30kW electric motor to a fuel-efficient 2.4-liter engine and six-speed automatic transmission. Future Hyundai hybrid powertrains will use start/stop and regenerative braking to further improve fuel economy.
