According to me, the sole advantage of using premium gas instead of standard gas in a 3.8 is maybe different or better additives. My 2011 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 would get 87 octane unless I put a tank of premium 91 octane in it and Techron Concentrate FI (the better Techron) cleaner every 5,000 miles. Up until I traded her in at 100K miles, the engine ran as smoothly as a baby’s bottom. Less sales could be a premium disadvantage. Premium is more likely to accumulate water in filling station tanks since it spends more time there. Vehicles consume gasoline and dislike water.
I don’t really see much of an advantage in the 5.0. When using premium gas, the Hyundai/Genesis claims to have a slight increase in HP (+2->5, I believe), but how frequently are you operating at maximum HP? (rarely and only for very short periods). Running premium offers little value unless you’re dragging or monitoring your 3.8 or 5.0 Genny.

Hello Karen Currently, there is no need for the fuel additive. If you wish to, you can but are not required to add a bottle of Techron fuel additive to the gasoline tank. Hyundai recommends Techron. The gasoline additive will aid in cleaning the fuel system and injectors. The Premium Gas already has some additives, so adding more is not necessary. For instance, premium petrol at stations like Shell, Mobile, and SUNOCO has these additives blended in.
Only HIGHEST octane fuel or PREMIUM fuel is necessary for your specific car. Regular gas will cause the vehicle to slow down, lose power, and generate the pinging noises you are experiencing.
