We observe a man setting up the dreadfully common suicide scene—exhaust poured back into a car—in his garage. However, the man escapes unscathed thanks to the new iX35 from Hyundai, which emits only water. Get it? Nobody else did either, yet Hyundai is only now offering an apology.
Hyundai deleted an internet ad for its environmentally friendly European crossover SUV on Thursday, calling the ad “offensive” after a week-long criticism that dubbed it far worse than that. This was an attempt at viral advertising gone horribly wrong. After all, the advertisement for the South Korean automaker does roughly imply that the new iX35 is so clean that you can’t even commit suicide. The advertisement, named “Pipe Job,” was made by the Innocean agency. It shows a man setting up in his garage the dreadfully common suicide scene of exhaust being pumped back into a car. However, the man escapes unscathed since the new eco-friendly Hyundai automobile emits just water. Get it? (If it’s dark enough where you are, you can see the entire video below.)
This online-only advertisement, which went live last week, might make its point, and it appears that its goal was to garner some notice. But the Hyundai advertisement caused a dramatic backlash, particularly among people who had experienced suicide personally. Advertising professional Holly Brockwell explains the pain in an open letter to Hyundai “I started to shake when your advertisement began to play and I saw the gorgeously filmed sequences of taped-up car windows with exhaust feeding in. I had to put my glass down to prevent spilling since I was shaking so violently. I then started crying.” Additionally, the upbeat ending of the advertisement—an external cutaway showing the man walking out of the garage alive—didn’t help:
Surprisingly, I did not stop sobbing until I got to the part of your video when we see that the man actually survived because of Hyundai’s clean emissions. I didn’t instantly feel that your humorous message justified my tears. I simply felt void. and unwell. And I desired my father.
According to studies, there is a phenomenon known as “suicide contagion” when suicides increase as a result of media portrayals of suicide. Many places have guidelines on how to report on such situations appropriately because of this very occurrence.

There are numerous things that Santa Cruz is renowned for. its well-known skateboarding and surfing scene. the vast, luxuriant redwood forest. the beautiful coastline’s miles. Famous Hollywood productions including “The Lost Boys” and, more recently, “Bumblebee” and “Us” have been filmed here. Not to mention the 70,000 or so diverse individuals—musicians, artists, IT entrepreneurs, and regular people—that make up the community.
Stacy Peralta, a skating superstar and documentary filmmaker, directed a car commercial for the Hyundai Santa Cruz on Wednesday, giving our city yet another symbol for the world to identify.
He describes Santa Cruz as one of those incredibly distinctive California coastal communities. “Because this city possesses everything the great cities have, it is quite uncommon. It contains a massive cultural fusion in a little space.”
Hyundai’s Santa Cruz, a Sports Adventure Vehicle (imagine an SUV with a small truck bed attached), which was first unveiled in 2015, will begin to leave the factory this summer. The business recruited Peralta and his team to take pictures of Santa Cruz’s most famous sites and cultural connections as a way to announce its presence. For the primary scenes, the crew shot on location at Sergeant Derby Park, one of the world’s oldest skate parks, artist studios, and Henry Cowell forest.
Peralta claims, “We’re telling three separate storylines. One of them is about a professional surfer, one is about an accomplished artist (Jimbo Phillips), and the third one is about the skateboarders known as the Lady Lurkers.
The amount of Black Lives Matter support in this town, he continues, “also blows my mind.” I’m astounded.
Of course, a visit to Santa Cruz wouldn’t be complete without stopping at a few more of its well-known attractions. Streetlight Records, where the crew spent many hours filming, Pleasure Point, the Pacific Coast Highway, and the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk will also be included.
According to Peralta, “a bitchin’ record store is always the hallmark of a wonderful place.” “Because a town that doesn’t comprehend it cannot support a store like this. Towns have color because of these kinds of locations.”
Peralta, 63, gained fame as a member of the famed Z-Boys, a skateboarding team located in Venice, California, in the 1970s, and supported by Jeff Ho Surfboards and Zephyr Productions. By the time he was 19 years old, he was the top-ranked professional skater in the nation. He then started his own crew, the Bones Brigade, whose members permanently changed the sport thanks to the group’s iconic skeleton emblem.
The documentary “Dogtown and Z-Boys,” about the Venice gang and the beginnings of contemporary skate culture, was written and directed by him in 2001. In 2005, the biopic “Lords of Dogtown,” which Peralta also authored, gave it the Hollywood treatment.
He predicts that the advertisement will probably air in a few months, giving Santa Cruz’s cinematic and cultural resume even another feather in it.
“This place has an extremely strong cultural foundation,” he claims. “There is a strong emphasis on performance here. Everyone strives to be the best, whether they are musicians, artists, mountain bikers, hikers, skateboarders, or surfers. Thus, [Santa Cruz] is fantastic.”

I purchased it from the Kelowna dealership (which I wouldn’t recommend) and had maintenance done at the Vernon shop, where the service was excellent. In order to express my gratitude to the boys for how well they treated me, I drove pizzas over there one Friday afternoon.
