Long-term evaluation of the Hyundai Aura, initial report

The Hyundai Aura, which essentially replaces the Xcent in the brand’s lineup, is basically a mildly updated version of that tiny sedan. It has roughly the same proportions and the same fundamental shape. It has, of course, been updated with all the contemporary amenities that our market’s ever-hungry (and occasionally unreasonable) needs, but there’s one feature that neither we nor potential buyers expected to see in a compact sedan. Hold on to me.

But first, it was time to go back to a compact sedan after a year of driving a midsize sedan, the straightforward but highly capable Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. The size of the automobile wouldn’t be a problem because I travel by myself most of the time, and in Mumbai’s stifling rush hour, the smaller the car, the better. I was more worried about possibly having to give up some creature comforts if I moved a piece below. But since this is Hyundai, the Aura matched and then some, probably with the exception of auto headlights. Even a wireless phone charger is included. The big 8.0-inch touchscreen and the instrument cluster are housed in a single-piece binnacle, which is an incredibly luxurious touch.

The exterior appearance of the car doesn’t particularly appeal to me. Despite having somewhat pleasing dimensions (by the low standard of compact sedans) and some dramatic embellishments, everything seems out of sync. But I also don’t care because I spend a lot of time behind the wheel, which is an excellent experience. This time, they really improved the material quality, and the interior has a richness that belies its cost and market. It has everything: sumptuous fabric upholstery, rotating air conditioning vents that twirl shut, and knurled switchgear. This gets us to that one special object, finally. A 1.0-liter, direct-injection turbo-petrol engine with 100 horsepower and 172 Nm of torque powers the vehicle! Other automakers had (albeit pricey) engines similar to this, but they only used them in a single halo performance vehicle since they didn’t want to risk having a low displacement or too few cylinders (three) perceived negatively. And those engines are no longer there. Instead, in order to increase this unit’s adoption, Hyundai is making sure to include it in as many vehicles as possible.

I’m glad they took the chance since this amazing little motor transforms this shrew of a sedan into a veritable rocket. The nicest aspect is that it crawls off the line very smoothly and submissively; until you really floor it, you don’t realize how powerful it is. You may imagine my delighted surprise when I drove the Aura Turbo for the first time. Actually, the remainder of the car struggles to keep up as the front tires fight for traction and there is a lot of torque steer, which Hyundai should eventually look into. At best, it’s thrilling; at worst, it’s a touch unsettling.

My time behind the wheel has only been briefly due to the lockdown, but suffice it to say that I intend to put many memorable miles on this pleasantly surprising little Hyundai.
