Although South Korea has a solid reputation for producing painless consumer goods, a lot has changed since “that’ll be the Daewoo.” In a market where traditional saloons predominate, the G80 stands out as an imperious-looking saloon with a lowering rear roofline and a cut-off tail that suggests coupe-like grace. (Note that it has a standard boot that holds 424 liters, so it isn’t a massive vehicle.) Or maybe they suggest the Audi A7 Sportback. The usual arguments about being able to depict the silhouette of the car using only two lines are made, though to be fair to the designers in this case, the G80’s two-line game is actually quite good. The features behind the front wheel arches, in the headlights, and in the back lights all display it.
The “matrix” grille is your typical flavorful Asia-Pacific fare, though it’s performed better than most. It’s also huge, coming in at just 5mm short of 5 meters in length, resembling an S-Class more than the E it competes against, and possibly producing greater presence than the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, Jaguar XF, and the virtually indistinguishable Lexus ES. Prices for the G80 start at PS37,460, so it adheres to the adage that you get a lot of metal for your money (although we’d de-chrome it). But there is also a big number of possibilities.

As Americans favor bigger, higher-riding SUVs and crossovers than passenger sedans, the U.S. auto market is still shrinking. Because of this, there aren’t many options available for drivers who enjoy a spirited, athletic driving, especially if they desire sedans and coupes designed for the racetrack.
